DirectX 10 Cards?

I'm going to be upgrading soon and I'm thinking about buying an ATi X1900XT. I read that nVidia is going to be releasing a DirectX10 card before the end of the year...does anyone have any information on this? is it just one card, or are they releasing an entire line of DirectX 10 cards? Will they have any in the $250-300 range that would outperform a X1900XT?

Nobody that knows can say yet.

We're guessing late this year in time for Vista's release, but there is plenty of speculation that it will not happne UNTIL Vista releases even though these cards will be the fastest DX9 hardware going.

As far as pricing and actual products, everybody that knows is under NDA.

I'm holding out too as I have not moved over to PCIe yet (S754 and AGP baby!)

I plan on keeping my 7800GTX (Sli) for at least until UT2007 comes out. That will be the first major DX10 game for me. I still find myself playing the shit out of UT2004. After the game is released, then I will purchase the hardware that is required for DX10 games that will be out.

Hmm, ok then. I'll just wait until Christmas and either get a DX10 card if they have a mid-range one in my price range, or get whatever DX9 card I can afford.

UT2007 is DX9 isn't it?

Nope. According to the lead designer (His name escapes me at the moment) said in a recent interview that UT2007 will be DX10. I saw it over @ extreme tech a while back. It was on another site as well. (I cannot remember where)

Tim Sweeney said that it'll be D3D10 compatible, but I think he said that only to give a simple answer for the interviewee (some dweeb from nvnews.net. No, I'm not ATi biased or something, the guy just looked like a total douche) and the audience. The benefits that he referred to are basically the ones that D3D9Ex through the VDDM give.

UT2007 and UE3 is D3D9 based.

Honestly I Doubt that you will see DX10 before the end of the year. I am guessing that Microsofts decision to push back vista yet again is going to cause serious problems. Current estimates are that Vista will not be availible for consumer level until jan 07 so All those DX10 cards and games will go to waste as Microsoft has said they wont have DX10 on non vista systems. If the current state of beta is any idea though I would be willing to bet the push vista back yet again as the gaming performance is horrid right now and if it doesnt improve most will not upgrade.

For the love of god stop saying this CRAP. Yes the next generation of cards support DX10 but they are also faster overall just like every generation is. You dont have to have Vista use the next generation of cards just because they are DX10 "compatible". The next generation of cards will be a huge improvement even in Windows XP. The only downside in using the cards in XP is that you wont be able to utilise the DX10 features.

You're not going to see any DX10 cards until Vista is out. Both NV and ATI have plenty of hardware muscle out there right now and there is no race to put their current hardware into obsolence by rushing DX10 cards out there.

Be happy with what we have. X1900XT's for $250....GPUs have finally come back to the realm of reality. Who are those morons who were paying $500 for their GPU's anyway? lol

I bet those guys game on 17" CRT monitors too.

they WILL come out before Vista. Exactly when is anybodys guess.

I may STILL be running AGP, but at least I'm on a 19" crt :)

Bring Vista on. I won't replace the monitor though. It will be everything else...

I heard as well that it will play on D3D9, but if you want the uber graphics features or whatever, you'll need D3D10. So basically, you should be able to run it on XP with D3D9, just not at ultra settings, at least that's the impression I've been getting.

Oh god where to start:

There will be hybrid versions of most games DX9 and DX10 (more properly referred to as WGF 2.x)

The G80 is looking to arrive mid somewhere around Oct-Nov. Could it be late? Yep. Could it be early? Yep. Is it tied to only coming out when Vista arrives? No. Is is going to be a great DX9 card? Oh yeah!

Vista is going to be here in January. It might be unfinished and broken, but you can bet a few executives at MS that it will arrive before January is done. Pay attention for the customer preview beta as that will be the version to watch.

By the time the 600 arrives there is likely to be a 8050 to meet it or shortly thereafter. Think spring refresh.

Remember the transition to DX9? Expect the use of DX10 (since it's not backwards compatible) to come in the form of "one set of disks for DX9 one set of disks for DX10" and also expect the production of games for DX10 to not really get into full swing for another year. There will be some noteable exceptions from major providers but most games made in 2007 will be DX9 with some DX10 gloss layered on if they feel the market warrants.

LOL, Theres NO way in hell that the R600 will be released AFTER Vista launches. The R600 will be out BEFORE Vista launches and I am 100% sure of it. ATI is not going to let Nvidia have the only DX10 card on the market at the launch of Vista.

^^ On paper, Yes I agree. ATI HAS to have an offering for Vista... Although manufacturing issues can (and probably will) get in the way :S

Ask yourself, of the past 3 card launches by ATI, how many of them have been later than they were earlier predicted?

Now when, exactly, do you think the 600 is going to arrive? I hope you are right, because it should be one helluva card, but I wouldn't put money on it.

This launch has a lot more riding on it. ATI will probably paper launch a month early if it looks like they wont have the R600 ready at Vistas launch. I personally think that the G80 will be out around October/November and the R600 before xmas.

R600 is like sex. Even if it's months late after it was promised, you'll still be damn happy after it's all said and done. It'll eat the G80, I've got money on it.

as per the question by the OP, I don't remember any release of a single card. It's always a line of cards. When they come out is anyones guess. Just because they're dx10 compatible, doesn't mean they have to wait for vista. Holiday season is big for everyone, so someone will release something.

Ugh, I can't decide. I want to buy now, but I don't want to get screwed when a better videocard is released in a month from now or the prices drop $50. I have about $300-340 to spend on a videocard by my calculations. I'm looking at an X1900XT 512MB. Should I wait? :(

I just bought a Connect3D 1900xt for $235 off off of newegg. $15 instant savings with a 100 mail in rebate. Not a bad deal if I do say so myself. If you continue to waityou will never get anything. The next best thing is always just around the corner. Find a good deal on a goodcardand get it. Enjoy it until your next purchase. I'm going to wait until the second generation of DX10 cards come myself. So the end of next year will be my new build. Till then I will enjoy my 1900xt to it's fullest. :D

Just wait. I been thinking about same thing. I wanna upgrade to but am going to wait untel dx10 support is out and unified cores are out.

This whole DX10 ordeal is stopping me from upgrading to a Core 2 Duo as I'm still running a 9800 Pro and don't have a PCI-E card to hold me over if I do upgrade. So I'm wondering, whats the cheapest PCI-E that is just a tiny bit faster than my 9800 Pro?

I usually prefer Nvidia so I would recommend a 7600GS. Why not just go to somewhere like newegg and look at the prices? ;)

That's baloney, 1900xt's go for $350 right now. 7900gt's are $250 though.

What's the best motherboard for <$125? Are the DS3 prices ever going to drop to a reasonable level?

Well, my system was one of the top systems 2 1/2 years ago or so. I have P4 3.2 HT, 2GB ddr dual chan and AGP 8X Ge6800gt, still I play BF2, Prey and other current games with max settings and get fast frame rate awsome image quallity.

I build my self a new rig every 3 years, I think thats good pace. Next for me will be quad core "Kentsfield" ddr3 with the next generation of nvida card "geforce 8 series." Heard that quad core should be out by end of the year if no in Jan. Thats should be the right time to get my a new system, I'll say around March where DX10 and most games will be already build on DX10 and vista will be more widwly use.

Hopefully dx10 cards come out soon. I'm holding out with my agp card until i can snag a dx10 and a core 2 duo. I'd already have the core 2 and still using my card if it wasn't agp. So i figure i should wait it all out instead of buying a 7900 right now and wanting and upgrade when 10 is out.

My prediction is that the R600 and G80 will be out holiday season, in time for everyone to buy one as a christmas gift. An X1900XT would be just dandy until DX10 GAMES come out in which case you can still play them. I plan on upgrading when DDR3, AM3, and DX10 games come out so i can utilize the graphics cards.

If you look at when DirectX 9 was released (December 24th, 2002) and when DirectX 9 cards came out (August 2002) and then compare to when games that really started using DirectX 9 came out (March 2004, Far Cry). Theres around a 2 year delay between when the cards come out for a new directx version and when decent games start coming out for a new directx version. Also its not like developers are just going to drop support for directx 9 hardware, the user base for directx 9 hardware is huge. They will still include a path for dx9 hardware in games they also include a path for dx10 hardware.

So if your looking to buy a new video card today then buy one today, dont sit and wait for directx 10 cards as its going to be a while before games really start using directx 10.

your missing a VERY important point. the DX10 cards will be an improvement in EVERY way NOT just because they support DX10. I wish somebody would make that a DAMN STICKY!

oh by the way Crysis will take advantage of DX10. :D

Why do you want to waste money on another DX9 video card? I'd get a conroe + AGP + DDR mobo as a stop gap and use your existing card and memory. You can get such a motherboard for about $62 bucks.

yeah crysis will take advantage of directx10 but when that will happen know one knows. Vista keeps getting delayed, god knows when it will launch. also all the previews we have seen on crysis are directx 9 not directx 10. Those people that think what they have seen in all the preview movies for crysis is directx10 is mistaken. How could that be? no directx10 hardware = no directx 10 preview of crysis. emulation? not possible since teh directx 10 dev kit hasnt been release yet.

Crysis is supposed to be released this fall but they will probably delay it until Vista comes out.

in a nuttshell... yes

but overall... you are kinda missing the point. I'd suggest you go do some reading about what directx 10 offers, and how it is different from directx9

DX10 isn't just adding "features" like dx9 did.... it isn't like that this time...
