Direct3D Windowed mode and Transparency is SLOW

I've looked everywhere and I can't find anything about this problem. There are many programs that I use that run in Direct3D windowed mode. The problem is that when anything with tranparency (menus, other transparent windows, start menu transitions... etc) is used, it makes the frame rate drop to extremelly low levels. A few programs that I've used that do this are the Warcraft 3 map editor, Project64 N64 emulator, 1964 N64 emulator. Whenever I click on a menu and there is something being rendered in Direct3D it slows down to the point where I can barely do anything on my computer with a 9700pro. This happens with my old 9700pro and my new x850xt. And it also happens in different computer, so I'm thinking that it has to do with some kind of driver bug. Has anyone here encountered this problem and also came across a fix besides disabling all transparency affects in windows?

i have, it was something wrong with the operating system, possibly drivers. i remember i reformatted and everything turned out fine. but i had the same problem you did. it bugged the heck out of me. my comp crapped two days before a lan. try reinstalling drivers and if that dont fix then id reformat. its what i did and it helped. but it may be a different solution to this.

I know that will not work... I get this problem even when I start fresh. It always comes back. There has to be a fix for this somewhere...

Try re-installing your chipset drivers. Mine (NF3 and NF4) shit themselves often during bouts of overclocking (hard drive corruption), and I get the same sorta problem, really noticeable in windows menus. Just slap the chipset drivers back in, and it works just dandy. Something to do with the GART drivers, mebbe?

Just wondering if you found a fix for this problem, i have it all the time in world of warcraft. I play it in windowed mode so i can use msn and firefox etc.. every time a tool tip appears on the taskbar or i click the start menu the framerate crawls.

Nope, I haven't... tried reinstalling the drivers. It has to do with Direct3D it doesn't happen with OpenGL
