Direct Cable Connection -- serial or parallel cable? Or?

I have decided to use DCC to connect my two computers for my home network. This is because both computers are only 2 meters apart. I was wondering if I should use a serial cable or parallel cable for best speed results, or does it matter? Both motherboards are less than a year old, so they have the 25 pin female connector, and each has a 9 pin male serial connector.

I was hoping I could DCC with firewire cable, is that possible? Or can I do DCC with a USB cable? I am leaning towards parallel because of low cost. Which connection should I use? Thanks for the advice.

Uhhhh or you could make this really easy on yourself and just get two cheap NICS and use a crossover cable, set two different static IP's and wallah.

Yeah, make it easy and use ethernet. Faster, more reliable, and much easier to setup and get parts for.

IF they are recent you dont even need a crossover cable (nforce 3+4 both auto sense, dont know about others) But it can be done w/ firewire straight out the box on XP, and you can do it with usb, but you need a special doohickey.

You could use firenet or something like that for your firewire, but a cross over cable will run you about $1-$5 and even the nics can be had for cheap if you don't have any.

Each motherboard has a built in Ethernet port, and those are being used by each computer for internet connectivity to the cable router. That means crossover is not an option, because I don't have anymore Ethernet ports to use on each machine. I guess I will go parallel. I don't got cash for 2 Ethernet cards so I'm gonna try parallel and see what happens. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, appreciate it.

Dude...dude..your making this harder then it needs to be.

You have two computers with two BUILT IN ethernet adapters. Those cables are going into a cable router with a built in switch? Most cable modems only have 1 ethernet hookup.

If thats the case, then your already hooked up, you have a mini-network right now! Just simply put them into workgroup mode, share your folders/printers ect... that you want and wallah!

yeah do what he said... why the hell would you need a seperate DCC? they are already connected if they are both hooked up to the router.

Yeah, I guess we're all curious why you're trying to direct connect them outside of your existing connection. If you're already using a router, you can easily set it up so you can transfer files from one to the other. Just run XP's home network setup wizard (go into network connections and look to your left). Make sure you give them both the same workgroup name, and then right click on any of the folders and hit the sharing option.
