Ok so... I was reading a thread where someone put WHS in vmware.... that is all great and dandy.. I thought about doing that and when I did.... that means all your files/backups would be through .vmdk files.... is there a way to tie a VM (esx4i) running WHS as the guest OS have direct access to a physical hard drive?

so if the vm went down you could then remove the drive and put it into a different computer and get to your data......

possible?
 
Nothing stops you from attaching another .vmdk to the VM and then once your data is backed up to it, you could easily download the .vmdk to a separate location.

that is what im finding.. dindt know if there was a way to actually utilize a NTFS drive...

but i see what you are saying... I could make a .vmdk file and install the OS as say C:...
then create a second disk and keep files on it.... if my main goes bad I can open it up under another vm.... the only negative thing would be if the machine dies.... then alot harder to get to the vm's....
 
I'm currently trying to figure this out as well. There seem to be trade off's with different ways to do this. One way is to setup Windows Server 2008 R2 and use Hyper-V. This allows me to create VM's and use physical drives just fine. My only problem is I don't own a copy of Windows Server. This way would be ideal for my situation but I just don't have a few hundred bucks laying around for an operating system I probably don't need. Another way is to run VMWare on a Windows 7 Box. One problem with that is Windows 7 doesn't let you use a physical drive in a VM. For some reason it recognizes and somewhat "uses" the disk even if its in an unformatted and offline state. So far my only way to do this is to actually use VMWare with virtual drives. It scares me as I'll be backing up 3TB of data. If one of the disks goes bye bye.. thats a lot of time lost.
