Dioes this seem like a video card problem?

I was playing The Secret World two nights ago and started getting little black squares on the screen...

Here's an example of what they look like: http://i.imgur.com/8uPqI.jpg

Obviously only two got captured in the screenshot as they flicker quite a bit, but sometimes there are 10 or so of them scattered around the screen.

The card is a HIS 6950 2GB (reference) with unlocked shaders so my first thought was to reverse the shader unlock. I shutdown, switched to the second BIOS and tried again, with the same result.

I did however notice that running The Secret World in DX9 (instead of DX11), did not produce these squares. That said, I had been playing TSW with DX11 fine without the squares for quite some time.

Last night, I wanted to troubleshoot some more, and took the card out and cleaned any dust out of it, put it back into the machine. I downloaded Unigine Heaven DX11 benchmark tool and ran through it twice. Once with defaults, the other maxed out. Neither time did I see any of these black squares on the screen.

I thought the problem was resolved, so I loaded back up TSW in DX11 and the squares were there.

Because I'm a second hand owner, and HIS RMA isn't great to begin with, I'm a little weary of trying to get an RMA number and sending the card back. My main fear is that they will say NTF (no trouble found) and make me pay to have it shipped back to me...

Also, forgot to mention, the card is not overclocked and has ran fine for quite some time. I did notice when I started getting the black squares that the temperature was 88C with the fan only running at 35% This is the first time I've ever really checked the temperature. I downloaded HIS iTurbo tool and the automatic fan control profile for this card is crazy. It doesn't ramp up the fan to significant speed until 90C. This seems to be a problem with all 6950 cards from scouring Google.

Any thoughts?

Edit: I just checked the BIOS in RBE for the fan configuration. At 88C it should be going at 75% fan speed. I ran Unigine in windows mode, with GPU-Z beside it. Card got to 80C but fan never passed 33%. This happened on both the unlocked shaders BIOS AND the stock BIOS. Fan goes past 33% fine manually, I guess some sensor is busted?

Seems to be an isolated issue with card drivers with this game title. What version drivers are you currently running? 12.6 is the latest official release, there is 12.7 BETA available for download at Guru3D.

I'll second this sounds like a video driver issue and not a hardware issue. No need to RMA this card.

I was running 12.2 or 12.4. Then the issue started and I updated to 12.7 BETA.

What about the fan ramp-up issue? Could that be driver related?

The fan issue does sound like the temp sensor. In the past I just manually set the fan speed to where the card temps stay reasonable without sounding like a jet engine.

So the temp sensor on the card can go awry but still report the temperature to the software? That's where I'm confused. It seems like if I can see the temperature in an application, then it should ramp up the fan...

I cannot figure out what is wrong... I'm just aggravated now... I disable CCC/MOM which should completely allow the BIOS to controlt he fan by itself...

Running 1400RPM at 55 idle.

Ran Heaven DX11... didn't ramp up til 90C, then ramped up just enough to keep it under 90C each time.

Once Heaven DX11 was closed it dropped to 2500RPM until it hit 55C then back to 1400RPM.

I have no idea if this is a card issue or another issue...

I just cleaned all the ATI drivers off my system, and installed completely fresh 12.6.

I'm still thinking it's the card since TSW worked fine before... but because it's not doing it in Heaven DX11 benchmark I'm hesitant to RMA it and get a NTF and have to pay return shipping.

So I downloaded the HIS iTurbo tool and set a custom fan profile that keeps the fan running at 60% above 60C. Was able to play TSW without any square for 30+ minutes in DirectX 11. I guess it's an overheating issue... The card still does not fan ramp correctly under the BIOS settings, not sure if I can RMA for that.... But I will wait until last possible moment to do it, or the problem re-occurs before I try...

For anyone curious... Seems like a black square fix was once listed as an ATI driver fix for Bad Company 2.

This issue is closed for now. I think these black squares are a DX11 driver/game issue (though they do appear in 3D Mark 11 too). They aren't present in Heaven DX11 benchmark.
