My HTPC has been in retirement for a while, and when my parents were here for Christmas, I used my spare hardware to upgrade theirs, so I'm going to be looking for new parts. Right now, my HTPC is a DH-101 and no internals. While the DH-101 is a nice case, I'm trying to decide whether to keep the case or try to make something smaller. Today, I found 120mm Drive Rack kits at MountainMods, which would allow for three 3.5" hard drives to be placed directly behind a 120mm fan, eliminating the need for a conventional hard drive cage, assuming there is space for the drives. The next thing I found was the item shown below. It allows for a 2.5" SATA drive to occupy expansion bays. The little spring clip on the door puts pressure on the drive when it's closed and the setup allows for the drive to be externally accessible. Does this sort of device justify the $30 price tag? In the role of an HTPC, would a 2.5" SATA drive have adequate performance? I could throw in SSDs, but that's not exactly a cheap option.

So, if I abort the DH-101 and go with a more compact case, any case suggestions? If I go with small drives, I woudn't need really anything but an optical drive.
