OK here's the scoop. I'm dying to get a PS3 but I recently got my dad (I'm 19) to use his newegg preffered account to buy me the rig below and so I'm paying him monthly by small amounts.

Problem is, I'm really sick of computer games and my desk is very uncomfortable so this was a big waste of money. I thought buying a new rig would bring me back but I was wrong.

I still have about 600 dollars extra on me (I only work 6 hours a week, no reason to save up right now) and I would like to purchase a PS3, but my parents would probably be mad at me (because I just bought 1200 worth of hardware for gaming..).

What should I do? :(

with 600 bucks on you, i don't recommend a ps3 purchase. you'd need about that much to really enjoy it and with the core, one controller and a couple of games... well, i think you'd regret it a bit.

unless you have another 600 bucks on its way in time for christmas shopping, which it sounds like you do not.

ninja swap the rig?

Well it will only cost me about 450 for the console and the games I'll just be renting through gamefly, so it's not bad.

And no I won't be getting anything for christmas, maybe a DVD :( My dad doesn't like me, any money that he's forced to spend on my enjoyment is a waste of money because I don't want to be a construction worker like he is.

Can't swap the rig because I bought it for 1200, I'll never get more than 1000 even if I part the rig, it would be a huge waste in my eyes and my parents are going to kill me, no way I can do that

No offense, but you sound spoiled. Sounds like you need to get a full time job. Your 19 and only working 6 hours a week? I'm 21 and putting in 40 hours a week.

before this gets into a flame thread, let me just say don't bother. if 1200 bucks bores you, the ps3 will too

Grats, I'm a full time college student and work for my college, and I don't need any more hours.

Spoiled? I'm buying this all with my own money that I saved up working

Read: I'm paying for the computer, not my dad.

How does that comment relate to what I'm asking anyway? I don't really care about your opinion on my financial situation or my living arrangements

I think this sums it up.

That, or you could try other computer games? Maybe it is the type of game? An uncomfortable computer desk is another issue entirely, not one that really makes someone dislike PC gaming.

I would try and stick with it, since you can't unload the PC anytime soon I would try to look at it with a different light and figure out HOW you can still enjoy it, rather than just spending time and effort trying to work around a problem that is basically not going to go away! :p

It's just the fact that PC games aren't optimized for a specific set of hardware and glitches come up now and then, and I would also enjoy it much more if I could play on a huge TV while chilling on a sofa with a controller.

Plus it's not a bad way to start building credit since I just got a secured credit card through my bank and I couldn't use it on Newegg (my dad used his and I'm paying him whatever the invoice is monthly)

Well, if you have $600 and the above are your desires.....buy a 37"+ widescreen TV and wireless input devices. Keyboard, mouse and gamepad. ;)

Why does this sound familiar?

Oh, right. I bought and assembled PC myself with the intention of gaming, and although I've slowly started to spend more and more time with it, I still use my 360 more (even though I only play one game on my 360). I also find my crappy, poorly assembled desk (my fault for asking my sister to help instead of my dad) to be terrible, since the desk/monitor wobbles if I type too fast.

Methinks you're suffering from buyer's remorse. Stick with the PC and you'll eventually start to enjoy it. Keep that $600 to buy some games or something.

i run both my ps3 and pc on my 47" 1080p. everything from the couch, excellent.

i hear you about your old man and the construction worker thing...

...except for i wasn't getting anywhere finding a tech job in ottawa after i finished my comp. sc degree (same year as nortel crashed... bad timing ftl) so i actually joined up with my old mans union hall.

couldn't be happier now, actually!

funny how things work out and strange that you're in a similar situation... except for i was playing cs 1.6 on a celeron 800 based ibm thinkpad when i was in college. :p

PS3 is a solid and reliable hardware, you could save some money by buying an used PS3.

yes buy a used one. Or do the $100 thing, I did, and I got a PS3 for $160 after tax.

What 100 dollar thing? :O 160???

And a used one on eBay is a waste of money. Most of them are the old 40GB models and go for 300 used. I rather spend 100 extra for a warranty, 40 more gigs, and everything included for sure, without nasty dirt or anything on the controller

Whatever your parents say it's your money and you should do whatever you want with it. With that out of the way if you don't have any friends you can play online with on the PS3 then don't bother because you'll just end up back here.

Sign up for the Playstation card, save 150 or whatever on the Ps3 and enjoy it. 250 for a Ps3 is much better than 400

I did actually the other day but since I have no credit there's no chance I'll get accepted. When I finished applying it just said thank you for applying, we will review your application and send you a reply within 30 days, which I think usually means no.

Anyone know if that's true?

I've gradually switched over to PS3 gaming more than PC gaming. It's worked out well.
My rig is about 3 years old and really getting overdue for a complete replacement, cpu/mb/gpu/memory etc... but there are so many other ways I'd rather spend the money. For me, PC gaming has been on a steady decline. There have been maybe 2-3 games all this year that I actually liked enough to beat. Whereas PS3 gaming is really starting to come into its own. There were barely any games the first year, but 2008 has been a lot better, and 2009 is going to really kick ass. So I say get a PS3. And yeah it makes sense to just get a new one with ds3 and a warranty, etc than saving $100 on ebay.
