My current system specifications:
A64 3500+ ClawHammer
ASUS A8V Deluxe
1024 MB Dual-Channel Kingston Value DDR PC-3200 3-3-3-8
BBATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB 256-Bit AGP
And I want to upgrade.
I'd like to get:
A64 X2 3800+ or A64 X2 4400+ (dilemma)
ASUS A8N-E (definitive choice)
Corsair TwinX XL PC-3200 2 x 512MB 2-2-2-5 (definitive choice)
Radeon X1800 XL 256MB or Radeon X1800 XT 512MB (dilemma)
As for the CPU dilemma ... well, it is what it is, I don't know what to get. Should I save money, and over-clock the 3800+ to, say ... 2.4 Ghz (for example, to start with), or get a more expansive but "future proof" 4400+, keep it at stock speeds to maintain its full life span potential, and get the advantages of 1 MB of L2 Cache ?
And the main dilemma here, the GPUs.
I intend to play my games at no more than 1280 x 960 (due to my monitor's limits with Refresh Rate at the mentioned resolution, because higher than that I'd get way too much eye-strain, so I'll stay between 1024 x 768 at 100 Hz or 1280 x 960 at 90 Hz, lower than 90 Hz and I eventually get motion sickness to some extent, it's nothing huge, but it feels strange, and it's annoying).
Technically speaking, I could buy the 4400+ and the X1800 XT, but if I can save money, and get pretty much the same performance with lower-end parts, then I'll go for it.
I know such a GPU upgrade is indeed worth it.
But I'm still thinking about the CPU upgrade. I'd like to do it, since I feel some performance decrease from my 130nm ClawHammer. I presume it's still a good enough Processor.
But going from ClawHammer to Manchester at 90nm might give me more "room" for the future and all those core revisions since the former build (ClawHammer) to this point will surely benefit. It's not like I'd go from Venice to Manchester. That, I wouldn't have upgraded. But from ClawHammer, at 130nm ... it's tempting. Unless you guys explain why I should keep my aging single-core CPU.
But let's keep in mind that the main dilemma here is the GPU upgrade.
Is there really much differences between the X1800 XL and the XT at "lower" resolutions ?
I'm using a CRT, so I am not "limited" to a native resolution. I could play my games below 800 x 600 if I wanted to (just to say). But I do not want to, and couldn't play at more than 1280 x 960.
So I guess paying $820+ (Canadian) for an high-end GPU wouldn't be worth it if I want to play at lower resolutions ?
And how much time should the XL maintain good performance with the next generation gaming coming ? Such as Unreal Engine 3 ?
I'd like to get some suggestions.
