I bought a canon "speedlite" 420 EX for digital rebel & have a problem with the recycle time on it. Anyone know of a batterypak or handle that could back me up on power? Appreciate any suggestions.... noobie
The 420EX doesn't feature any sort of external battery pack connections.
About all you could do to improve recycle times would be to buy some powerful Ni-MH batteries, IIRC. But I really haven't had issues with recycling times for sports inside gyms even when bouncing the light off of the ceilings. Then again I'm at f/1.8-f/2.0 @ ISO 1600, so the flash doesn't need to put out too much light to be picked up by my camera... Basically just lessen the load on the flash so it doesn't need to recharge quite as much is all I can suggest.
What is the recycle time you're experiencing, and what is the documented or expected recycle time for the type of batteries you're using? I think I read somewhere (after I saw your post in that other thread) that you should only expect about a 7-second recycle time with fresh alkalines, but don't take my word for it.
For reference, on a fresh set of four 2250_mAh NiMH AAs, the Metz 54MZ-3 we have at work will recycle from a full-power (or nearly full-power) flash in only three or four seconds. When the batteries get low, the recycle time will increase dramatically (15 seconds or even more, but by then I'm usually swapping batteries).
Thanx 4 the input... I shot a friends wedding very shortly after getting the DigReb & used new alkaline batteries. During the walking down the aisle I missed some shots because it was taking 15-20 second to recycle. I am thinking of getting another flash but don't have a ton of dough to throw around.. Any ideas? Thanx HAL
