With the arrival of the D2X getting closer by the day, I had to decide on how I was going to store my images. I looked at the price of the 4G CF cards but they are expensive enough that a digital wallet would have been more cost effective. Originally, I was looking at the Nikon Coolwalker as it is pretty much exactly the same price as the 4G card. Then I was eyeing the Epson P2000 with its gorgeous ~4" screen.....

....and then I saw this little guy......

Wow - perfect! Tiny little fellow, 1GHz Centrino, 40G storage, DVD, etc, etc, etc.

So, it is now the latest addition to my camera bag. I added a PC serial card to it so I can use it for work and now all it needs is a PC CF reader.

Here is a size comparison next to my wife's notebook:

Now that.... is cool. How much? Give us a mini-review. How do you like it? Anything missing? Anything you wished it had?

Well, I only just picked it up so I haven't done much more than install MS Office and sync my PDA to it. The screen is amazing though, much nicer than the Epson I was looking at last.

It was $1900CDN. It came with a preload of XP Pro. It only has 256M of RAM so that will have to be upgraded soon (max of 768). The HD is 40G which should be plenty to use as temp storage until I get it home. It has an SD reader built in but that is pretty much useless to me - a CF reader would have been real nice (PC version on order). It has a 56k modem, 10/100 ethernet, PCMCIA, USB 2, firewire and WiFi (2.4GHz/54Mbps) so got all those bases covered. The optical drive is a combo DVD reader/CD writer. Dunno yet if it has a composite out - that would be a handy feature.

Pretty neat so far. Gotta "babysit" the riggers at my tower site tomorrow so I'm going to install a pile of software and give it a good spin.
