Digital to solve my noise problem?

ok just to be clear my computer speakers work fine no noise what so ever they are perfect except that they are not the greatest speakers, so heres where my problem comes in i want to hook up my sound card to to my reciever so i can use my extra speakers and my sub for my computer system ( my computer is about 6 feet away from audio system so distance isnt that big of a deal). I used an adapter that took the 3.5mm jack and split it into 2 rca connections but there is this annoying back ground hum, this hum is not prevelent on my computer speakers.

so what i am wondering is if that i use a digital output will this take away this hum? I know i can buy better cables but that cost more money than just useing the digital output. my reciever can decode DD, and DTS, so useing the digital out put wont be a problem

edit: im a noob be gentle if this is a stupid question.
 
Not a bad idea.
Be sure to add the thing about using two 75 ohm adapters to isolate the cable tv ground from the rest of the system.
 
alrighty that was a little wierd, the only cable connection i have goes straight into the tv, my reciever has only an xbox and dvd player hooked up to it besides the tv, so i read that little guide and it said to disconnect the cable and see if the hum goes away, well it got alot louder when i disconnected the cable, the cable runs right behind my sub, could that be a problem?
 
Care to make a little ASCII diagram of how that works? Easy consumer products to plug in? I've never had to deal with ground loops. I don't have cable. I get Netflix instead.
 
so if i used the digital output, would the noise still be there? and does it matter if you have a crappy sound card with digital out put? im using a creative sb live, but i have another cheap card that has digital out put

well, you weren't kidding, that IS a crappy drawing... :p

however, from looking at it...

a) is the outlet that the computer is plugged into on the same circuit as the outlets everything else is plugged into?

b) have you tried plugging into a different outlet?

there aren't any stupid questions... :) ground loops suck... :mad:
 
i muted everything but the main and mp3, and still the hum

to the post above, all the out lets in this room are on the same circuit


i found a small 19" tv and unplugged my computer and plugged the tv in and hooked up the cable and pluged the head phone jack to rca adapter into the tv and the sound is perfect, so i only get a hum from computer, i guess my computer hates me and is leaking rf interferance :p i removed the audio cable that hooks up to the dvd drive from the inside and i turned everything off but the main volume and mp3 volume, tried removing cable tv from the tv made it worse i dont know how that works, my computer just hates me
