I originally purchased the HDA sound card which was connected to a Yahama Receiver. I went with this card for the DDL and optical connection. I have since moved and the computer is no longer connected to the Yahama receiver, so I am now looking at some speakers. I am looking for speakers that would sound the best using the HDA (preferred using the Optical cable if possible). Primary use is music (audiophile type stuff) and in-game music (mostly Everquest II)

why don't u just get any set of speakers that fit your budget, and connect it to the creative digital decoder?
 
If I would do that, I could just buy some radio shack speakers and use the onboard card. Sorry that completely defeats the purpose of having a DDL sound board.
 
What kind of output are you looking to get? 2.0? 5.1? Your card supports up to 7.1, I think, but if you're just listening to music, I'd get a nice set of active studio monitors.

But it will accomplish the same thing. The only reason you would need DDL is to run into an existing reciever, decoder, or HT. Just buy a pair of Ultras or something, encoding to DD and having a set of speakers decoding isn't going to give you any better sound than using the analog outs.
 
I dont need to go to the extreme of 7.1, but a very good sounding 3.1 would be efficent. Would my only option be to using analog? That would be disappointing since the key reason why I purchased the card was for the optical. I suppose I could always go and purchase another receiver. Decissions decissions
 
umm... with ddl you just need a descent resciever and your speakers. attach your speakers to the resciever and your resceiver to the soundcard via optical.

you do not need special speakers, unless your looking for them

the only reason to use the optical connection would be to send a digital signal to another unit to use it's DAC (digital to analog converter) rather than the card's DAC...

no offense, but i think you are misunderstanding the concept here... there is no such thing as "digital speakers"... speakers are analog...

there are things advertised as "digital speakers"... those are packages that have a control unit that has a DAC in it (some may have the DAC located at the speaker, not sure)... unless the DAC in the speaker package is better than the DAC on your card (beats me, none of them are probably what you'd call 'audiophile quality'), then there's no real reason to buy this... just use the analog outs from your card and get better speakers...
 
Thanks ccotenj, indeed there was some confusion, particularly with "digital speakers". It is a shame, that I have to revery back to using the analog connections, but I suppose it is not to bad. I was planning on moving to x64 and the drivers so far does not support the Optical out anyways. So, what are some speaker recommendations. I hear alot back Klips and ProMedia... are these recommended for ongame and audio file configurations (non-movie)? Price range I am wanting to say at is no more than 200 bucks. eBay/online stores/online personal ads/etc will all work (not limited to store front sales).

to the OP you CAN still use your digital out on the HDA-M with this thing

with the creative digital decoder, you can just run the optical out from the hda-m into the optical in. then just get any set of pc speakers, and hook them up to the decoder. if you want speaker recommendations

pc speakers: the big 3 (klipsch,logitech,gigaworks)

or you could just go receiver and home theater again
