i have the 5.1 ultras and was wondering if i should invest in a digital decoder. and also, what does a digital decoder provide and do? thanks for the help.

With the Audigy as a source.... No. It is a waste of cash.
 
A digital decoder will decode a digital signal and send it out via analog connections. The Audigy will do that for you so it would be a waste like Mister X said.
