I have built an HTPC that I have hooked up to a Denon receiver. I would like to hook up for digital audio (5.1).
How do I connect from SB Live! 5.1 to the Denon?
Where can I find said cable?
And lastly, is digital audio worth it if I only use HTPC for MP3 music and AVI movies?

I ran into the problem between real 5.1 sound (rcas) and good quality (optical). I listen to music enough that I had to have the quality that digital audio provides, but by doing so I lost "real" 5.1 sound. It's a tough choice.
 
So I've been archiving my DVD's to sata hard drives, full quality. I want that quality to flow through to the denon reciever. I still have the SB Live 5.1. How do I make it happen?

The headphone to coax didn't work....

Any suggestions....
 
not headphone.. you need a digital output on your sound card... digital outputs come in two forms... optical and coaxal... there really isnt any differance between the two... they can both do 5.1 w/o a problem... see if you card has a digital output (its usually yellowish).... you will need an headphone jack (3.5mm) to rca to make it work.... coaxal digital only needs 1 cable... not 2 like a stereo cable...

Did you turn off the software dolby decoder in the cards drivers?

You have to set yout card to digital output only and turn off 5.1 processing, then movie sound will be sent directly to the reciever in it's DVD Dolby digital format, effectively bypassing the sound card.

This is the same as a direct digital DVD player connection to your stereo.
 
out the digital output of your sound card and into the digital input of your reciever.... turn on the dig output on your sound card (this may shut off the analog outs) and you should be in business
