Digital Audio Out Question

I have an ASUS Maximus Formula with Vista Home Premium and am using the Soundmax sound. I have Logitech Z-5500.

Is it possible for normal PC sound to output thru one of the digital outputs, coax or optical? I can't get it to work. In the Blackhawk application, selecting SPDIF, and testing, with the Z-5500 set to a digital input, the speaker test works, so I know the connection is OK. But the normal PC sound only outputs thru the analog outputs called 6 Channel Direct on the Z-5500.

If I had my PC hooked to an AV Receiver, how would I get the normal PC sound to output to it thru a digital connection?

There MUST be something I don't understand about this. Or is it NOT possible?

OK, cool. Thanks for the explanation and link to the other thread. But.......if I wanted to hook the pc to an AV receiver with only digital inputs, how would I get all the pc sound to go out the digital connection? I mean iTunes/WMP, the pc beeps and burps, all that? Can't do that? I'd have to go from the green out on the pc to RCA inputs on the receiver, and/or green/orange/black to RCA analog 5.1 inputs to somehow get 5.1 AND the pc sounds?

Seems dumb to have digital outputs on the soundcard and it only outputs 5.1 encoded stuff from a DVD or something on the pc. Can't play MP3's or pc sounds thru the digital out.

I should clarify. You can only send stereo OR something that is already encoded in Dolby Digital over the digital connection from the PC to the receiver. If you have games with surround sound or software which expands your stereo music to multiple speakers, you won't be able to transmit more than 2 channels.
