Different temps from different programs. what should I believe?

I'm now running an e6550 on an asus pb5 deluxe wifi/ap. I am running the cpu at stock speed, and I'm seeing very different temperatures from speedfan, TAT, and core temp. Core temp is telling me that both cores idle at 45-50, and loading at about 70. Speedfan and TAM are both reporting idle temps of 28-35, and load temps from the mid 40's to mid 50's. I had a lot of trouble getting those stupid pins from the heatsink to connect (I have never hated any computer component more in my life than the c2d stock coolers!) and the machine has literally been running under an hour. Which temperature do you think is accurate? And before anyone asks, yes I'm the guy who had coretemp report an e6600 idle at 113 degrees celcius, so maybe coretemp and my mobo don't get along. Thanks for any advice.
 
core temp. Speed fan is not based on the temp, its based on how far from tjunc you are. If they have the wrong tjunc temp then your temps are going to be wrong!

Well, Coretemp is telling me the tjunc is 100, and it seems to be about 15 degrees off from TAT and speedfan. since 100 is 15 degrees higher than the 85 degree tjunc that the 1066mhz fsb c2d's I'm wondering if that could be the issue. Doesn't it seem more likely that TAT would be correct, since Intel wrote it to monitor their processors?

also, I just tried throttling to 87/5% slower using TAT, and TAT/speedfan both gave me numbers in the very low 30's while coretemp gave me an implausible seeming 45 degrees celcius idling at only 776 mhz!

TAT is written for the Pentium M era of chips, not really for the C2Ds. Which version of Coretemp are you using? Most people would recommend the newest version of coretemp as the best one to use. There is an option in coretemp to show "delta from Tjunction" (something like that). If you check that box it will show you exactly what the chip is reporting, which is difference from Tjunction. That is as accurate as you can get, and takes the different values for Tjunction out of play - as long as you are 30C (or whatever value you prefer) from Tjunction, then you are good to go.
 
I'm running the latest version of all three programs. Idling, Coretemp is displaying 44/43 degrees, TAT is 32/31, and speed fan is 29/27. At 100% load, Coretemp is 66/66, TAT is 51/48, and speedfan is 52/52. Idling at 788mhz, Coretemp shows 49/47, TAT shows 34/32, and Speedfan shows 33/32. I'm not giving it more than a few minutes at each speed/load setting right now, but you get the picture. Coretemp is much higher than TAT and Speedfan in all situations.

Edit: If the temperatures that Coretemp is showing me are accurate, than does it seem likely that the hsf may not be seated properly? I want to be able to OC the cpu, but I don't want to run into dangerous temp levels.
 
CoreTemp is right.... its reading the CPU nothing to do with the Motherboard. How warm is your room?

Sorry if you have already said but what heatsink fan do you use, how did you fit it (in or out of the case?)

Ambient temp is about 20 C. I have the stock cooler, and I fit it inside the case. I suspect I may need to refit it before OCing. I have an antec P180B, with all three fans set to low, which was giving adequete airflow to cool me E6600 @ 3.0ghz for 6 months without a problem in a higher ambient temp environment.
 
Can anyone think of why there would be such a disparity between the temp on coretemp and the temp from TAT? I understand that TAT was written for the Pentium M, but it was basically identical (maybe a couple of degrees warmer) in reporting on my E6600.
 
I would get some tim clean (I use Akasa TIM-clean) and some lint free cloths and clean the heat sink and CPU up. Remove the board and then re-fit the cooler. I did the same thing with my HS/fan on my E6600 and i couldn't get it to sit right, I had to remove the board. If you want a cheap HS/Fan then get the Freezer 7 Pro, for the price its fantastic and will kick the intel cooler into next week!

as for the temps

They both read the temps every so many seconds, there is a chance that the cpu is warming and cooling and creating different readings.

I just cleaned up the hsf and cpu a couple of hours ago, then reapplied thermal grease and reattached the hsf. Would I need to go through all of that again to reattache the hsf outside the case, or would it be ok to just leave them in contact and secure the clips better? Thanks again for the help.

I would do it all again. You must use a smooth lint free cloth and tim clean though. If you scratch the heat spreader or the Heatsink contact your fooked.

To secure the clips push down in opposite sides until you hear a click then turn. I think the 775 retention method is shit, that’s why I now use a Heatsink with a rear bracket to screw onto
 
The reason they are different is that they are assuming different vallues for Tjunction. The chip reports its temperature as a delta from Tjunction, not an absolute temp, so all three programs are adjusting that value based on what they believe Tjunction to be. Normally I'd say Coretemp is correct, but 40C does seem high for a non-OC C2D, even with the stock cooler. On my E4300 TAT and Coretemp both report the same temp, with Speedfan being the odd man out - which is normally the case. Did you try an older version of Coretemp? Maybe the new version has a wrong value for Tjunction in it (seems unlikely, but you never know).

It would be nice if Intel would publish the Tjunction values somewhere.
 
A stock C2D can idle at above 40C. I know i wasn't alone in getting a cpu that for whatever reason, idles higher. There were many threads about Intel shipping concave cpus and some people lapped their cpu's to improve flatness. It didn't help my E6600.
 
Apparently, these new M0 stepping cpus even when using less voltage then other core2duos are producing a lot more heat, roughly 10-15c more. There have been many threads on these new M0 stepping cpus and why they produce more heat, but I have yet to find an explanation as to why they are so much hotter. Here is a picture of mine idling, under clocked to 1.6ghz and at 1.2vcore, temps are38-39c.

Not sure why you're getting so hot with such low voltage. I have to bump my vcore pretty high for a simple 3Ghz OC, and my temps are nowhere close to yours.

Your using the old coretemp, newest version will add 15c to your temps, so yours is at 65c which is similar to mine.
 
If you use the delta remaining to tjunction max, either version will be correct.


That's what I have been doing, keeping it 30-20c from the tjmax, but I would still like too know what the actual temperatures are just for peace of mind.
 
well CoreTemp I believe is the most accurate, but your expectations (calibrate your brain to interpret the results) should be different with different programs.

If you're using Speed fan you should try to keep your temps to 60C or less approx. +- a few degrees.

But if you're using CoreTemp like everyone has mentioned, it reports temps about 15C higher, and it is reporting the temperature of the internal die, so its higher, and its ok to be higher. So you don't need to necessarily keep it to 60C like in the "old days". Your temps can actually hit 70C+ and still be "ok".

Obviously lower is always better, and your expecations should match your cooling.

IF you're using cheap cooling and overclocking hard, you're going to have temps in the 70C's with CoreTemp.

If you use better high end air cooling or water cooling then you can & should expect lower temps.
