Different Core Temps

So I'm monitoring my CPU core temps through Speedfan and my Core 0 and Core 1 are consistantly reading about 10 degrees cooler than my Core 2 and Core 3? I am using a Thermaltake Typhoon VX.

Is this normal - should I reseat the heatsink? Get a different heatsink?

I first tried a IFX-14, but it doesn't work with my 790i board. Heard the 120 Ultra Extreme won't fit in my case (Cosmos S).

The VX has the stupid clip mounting setup doesn't it....

You need to get the pressure evened out. Reseating it probably won't help much if at all.

I have the regular Big Typhoon and it has the bolt down mounting setup. In order to get temps that are never more than 1c difference under load, I not only lapped the heatsink base, but also the CPU, and I have the bracket tightened down equally on all 4 hold downs.

I am pretty sure the VX doesn't get near as much pressure on the CPU as the regular Typhoon does.

Try laying your computer on it's side so the heatsink isn't hanging from the board.

See if the temps even out and possibly even get lower.

You can also try wiggling around the heatsink to try and even out the heatsink compound.

Another trick is to go into the BIOS or even better, coretemp, and press on each corner of the heatsink where the fan mounts to see where it needs to be tighter.

Not really all that abnormal. Check out this thread over at XS. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=179044

It's a bit of a long read, but worth the effort. Great program by a guy that's really taking the time to understand the abnormalities that ALOT of people see on different processors.

I bought a universal backplate for a IFX-14 I have and am going to mount that instead. The plate that comes with the IFX-14 doesn't work with a 790i.
