I havn't really kept up on Intel's modeling scemes as of late, Im a technician and the last thing I want to do when I get home is work on my machine or read about new stuff. Anyways, I just bought an Asus P5GD1 board and a P4 530J. Im curious though on the difference between the old 530 and the new 530J. There was a 530 before no? The bus speed and cache seem the same size.
 
It's just the XD function. Basically it's the same thing as AMD's NX bit. All that it means is that certain types of malicious code will not be executed by the processor.
 
ah cool. So its sorta like AMD's internal cpu virus protection. I heard about that, it stops code from looping right?

Something like that. I hate how they call it internal virus protection. As it only stops one type of exploit. I've had customers say crap like, "I deleted Norton Anti-Virus because my CPU has Anti-Virus built in. Now my system gives me problems."

Pretty scary. I hate marketting guys. I think they all need to have thier dicks stepped on, and then set on fire.
 
Besides XD bit, J also has C1E control reducing the power consumption when idel and TM2 which reduces the frequence as well as inserts idle processes when the chip is overheating...
which doesn't work as well as SpeedStep which at least you can see some effects. 6xx has SpeedStep....
 
Personally I hate the idea of Speedstep. For notebooks I can see its bennifit, but I get annoyed when I do a clock check on a processor and it's frequency is much lower than it should be.

On Athlon XP-M notebooks I've never been able to get the full speed of the processor while running anything. Such "features" annoy the crap out of me.
