Difference on 480GTX on differnet systems

Let's say someone has a Q9550 with 4gb Ram and buys a 480GTX. How would that same card compare on a newer i7 on a comparable rig?

I see reviews with 480's on NEW rigs all the time, but nothing on something older. I know this is a common problem, but maybe an [H] admin could help with this. Pwetty please with chickens on top.

I would love to see some benchmarks like this myself. Some sites claim you will get a huge increase in fps if you are use a i7 over, for example, a q9550. I am very curious to see if there is any noticable difference, especially since I own a q9550.

I want to know if it is even worth my time and money to buy a GTX 480, or is my q9550 going to hold me back too much.

If you get it to 3.8ghz no problem then. There won't be big difference especially if you game at 1080p with AA. The improvements sites are talking about are mostly for multy gpu configurations.

Am I loosing a lot of fps with my q9950 compared to an i7 if I game at either 1680x1050 or 1440x900? That is what I game at.

NO.

At that resolutions your card will max out everything (except Crysis) without problem,so even if you lose some frames its not big deal!

You start seeing you are CPU bound at low resolutions.
Overkill to buy a 480/5870 for that low a resolution.

Wrong. i *did* hundreds of benches for it - using HD 4870, 4870-X2 and 4870-X3 TriFire on 5 CPUs
- Phenom II X2 550, x3 720, 955 X4, Q9550S and Core i7 - from their stock speeds, all at 3.5 GHz and again at each of their max OC - which varied from 3.8-3.9 GHz

there was NO clear cut winner at 19x12 or 16x10

and there are only a handful of games that use more than 2 CPU cores
