difference between X-Flow Rads and regular Rads?

Im shopping around for a new rad, possibly looking at the black ice GT because of its slim size but Im curious as to what the differences are to x-flow and regular rads? What kind of performance difference would it make? How does it work compared to a regular barb orientation rad? thanks in advance
 
As far as I know, the crossflow one will basically go in one end and out the other so that's one pass, a standard one will go in go to the other end and back essentially making two passes. Not sure on the performance differences.
 
Single pass heat exchangers dissipate heat more effectively in some situations. The Black Ice GT may have enough improvements (decreased fin width and thusly increased fin density without the need for high volume, high pressure fans) to negate the advantage of the X-flow. On the same foot, the single pass design of the X-flow may reduce water velocity (turbulance in the tubes is desirable) enough to make the X-flow peform worse than a BI Pro. On the other hand, the GT's improvements may not offer any performance gain over the BI Pros. There are few who have capable testbeds for radiators, so we may not know where these radiators compare for a while. Bill Adams did some in-depth testing for Swiftech, but that data belongs to Swiftech and may not ever be published.

Since the Black Ice rads are cheap enough, though, you might consider getting both and attempt to do your own testing. Depending on your configuration, having two may be a good benefit.

Lothar (founder and owner of CoolingWorks) says his CoolRad is superior to the Black Ice series to a very slight degree. They're about as cheap as BIPs and are dimensionally comparable.

It appears that Swiftech's radiators are actually pretty good, and in alot of circumstances, perform better than the BIP series. I only wish he did some comparisons with Thermochill as well. I would like to know if the Thermochill radiators are really worth the money or not.
