Difference between Western Digital Se and RE

The RE series has some tweaks for multi drive nearline enterprise storage. Even with these tweaks, they are nowhere near the performance of the Maxtor MaxLineIII/DiamondMax10. WD also claims that the RE drives are quieter both in motor and seek noise, although Hitachi, Seagate, and Samsung have all outdone WD here even with the RE improvements. They are also designed for a higher MTTF over the Caviar SE drives, although I can't remember off the top of my head if that translates to a longer warranty. WD themselves do not recommend RE drives for desktop users. IMO, you are better off looking at Seagate for reliability, Samsung for quiet, and Maxtor 16MB or Hitachi for performance before considering WD Caviar RE.
Well, the guide is organized by what's important to you. Every user and build is different.
For example, let's say there's 3 people that want 160GB of space. One of them wants it for their HTPC - I'd tell them to get a Samsung because they're very quiet. Another may need a drive for storing family pictures and other valuable data, and I'd stand behind them picking up a Seagate for the 5 year warranty. Another person may want to load their games very quickly, and a pair of 73GB Raptors may be the fastest solution for their needs. For general purpose storage, I really like the Hitachi 7K250 drives. They deliver best in class performance, solid warranty, and are fairly quiet at competitive prices. Every hard drive maker brings certain strengths to the market, and no one drive is the answer for all users. That's why the Guide is broken down by objective/usage model.
For you, it's going to hard to beat one of the 16MB buffer Maxtor drives. 250 or 300GB and the best performance available of any 7200RPM drive.

The difference is, stay away from WD. Unless you buy a Raptor, which is an Enterprise level HDD, you are asking for trouble. I stopped selling them because they are crap.
