Difference between Retail and OEM HS/Fan?

Now most of the time when I think about buying a processor, I always think OEM. I don't even consider buying retail, but for some reason I don't know why lol. Are retail HS/Fans really that bad?
 
Actually, they're getting better all the time and are generally fine for running at stock clocks. I always get the boxed processor when building a rig for someone uninterested in tweaking.

For personal use, I buy retail for the extra warranty and whatever extras might be included (yay, stickers!). The HSF can always be demoted to cooling duties on a secondary rig or for cooling the Jeebus out of a videocard. Heck, it's nice just having them lying around for emergencies or hooking up a buddy in need.
 
Thats not a bad idea. :D I was reading the reviews at newegg for the Athlon XP 2500+ and 2700+, and a lot of those people are OCing with the stock HSF. Some with excellent temps and some with alright temps. Mostly under 55C. That doesn't sound bad for stock.
 
I have to retail heatsinks here that I've never used but they are both pretty damn stout. One from a P4 1.8GHz and the other from a P4 3.06GHz. The second one as a lot of copper. A very nice piece.

I've even gotten decent oc'ing results with Intel's stock heatsinks.
 
Intel's stock heatsinks are getting better, but I bought retail for $5 more because of the 3 year warranty (OEMs have only a 1 year warranty), and the case badge. Case badge, 2 extra warranty years, and a heatsink fan for $5, that's really not that bad, now is it?
 
dont you lose warranty when you put Artic Silver or any thermal paste on the AMD retails cpus?

wouldnt they know if you try to RMA it that the thermal pad hasnt been used(unless its on running on another cpu)?
 
yeah i think that the warranty does go bad when you Arctic silver. Same thing when you overclock (i think)s

Yeah I just bought a 2.8C and the retail package was only $3 more. I have a Zalman hsf, but $3 for 2 more years of warrenty and a pretty decent hsf is hard to beat.
 
Retail HSF is not that bad. I am currently OCing my 1.6A with the retail HSF. Getting 138FSB and .075 added to the VCore. The temp is at 41C. My Zalman 7000A-Cu is coming. I want to see the difference between a retail HSF and an expensive HSF, lol.

You know what was weird tho? When I was using that thermal pad that came with the retail HSF back in the day, I was getting a 31C Temp reading. When I took that off and used Arctic Silver 3, the Temp went up to 40C.

That's the hsf I'm getting today, gonna try and OC my 2.8 a little. :D

You're supposed to use the TIM that comes preinstalled on the heatsink
 
EnderW, let me know how that goes. I am really worried about the weight of the HSF. The stock Intel HSF is tiny compared to that 700+ grams of pure copper. What CPU are you trying to OC?

That sucks how it voids the warranty when you put Arctic Silver. So wait, if you were to use the Intel stuff already and then you want to change motherboard or something. What can you do without voiding the warranty?

The HSF I got with my xp2500 was pretty nice. I put it in a rig I gave away to someone as a gift (athlon 1200). Kinda regret that I didn't keep that heatsink more than anything else (I even lapped it for him)... lol

The first copper based heatsink they started including looked pretty crude, but the new one looks a lot better. Full copper base with aluminum fins soldered to it I think? I can't even find a picture of it on the web anywhere.

Someone said they put a 80mm fan and a 60-80mm adapter on it and it was even better.
 
The Barton i just bought was a no frills alluminum heatsink BUT had a tin coated copper plate screwed to the bottom of it... reminded me alot of the silver mountain heatsink of 3 year ago... ooh when silver was king! Neways... built it for my father so used the stock tim... runs rather cool at 34c! not bad for a peppy little heatsink thats quiet... on another note... I love stock intel heatsinks...

How long ago did you buy it?

That's the one I was expecting to get, but the one I got was different. The base was a solid piece of copper without screws, and had aluminum fins on top. Surely someone must have a picture of this!

Maybe I'll go give my friend a aluminum heatsink "upgrade" and take back my copper baby :p
 
About HS and warranty, it was written in my Barton's documentation that using any other HS than the retail one would void the warranty... And the HS I got with it was strangely similar to the one I had on my Duron 850, except for the mounting base. :eek:
 
I have the saem barton 2500+ heatsink with the nickel coated copper plate, i lapped it, and the heatsink, applied AS5, and its now pushing 80F idle on my 9700 pro @394...cant wait to vmod it. so the barton stock HSF is really good if you ask me.
 
I get a full 500MHz on my 2500+ on stock heatsink with AS5 with loads in the low 50s.
 
I think I did something horrendously wrong when putting on the heatsink or thermal paste. I get 42/43 C idle, but 59 load. And it's not even stock HSF (zalman 7000 alcu). Gotta buy me some Arctic Silver, Antec's stuff isn't quite as good.
