Difference between inlet and outlet ports

Hey guys. I just picked up the Alphacool Single Laing D5 Dual Bay Reservoir. It looks great, and fits perfectly in my case (the Corsair 350D)... but I'm having some trouble figuring out which port is the inlet and which is the outlet.

There are only two ports, so is the inlet the top or the bottom one? The top port is clearly connected the the pump, but I don't know enough about pump functionality to tell what that means.

Thanks,

Bottom port is in. Water goes into the res through that hole, and enters the pump in the middle hole (middle of the pump) since pumps pull water perpendicular to their rotation and push it out parallel to their axis of rotation.

Top one should be the exit, coming directly out of the pump. The bottom one feeds the reservoir itself, which in turn feeds the pump from the single hole visible on the right.

Guys lets be civil to each other. Everyone starts at one point, and without practical experience the OP's question is valid. And has been answered. Lets leave it there.

OP any other questions on assembling your loop dont hesitate to make a thread and ask, of course pictures are needed !

Uhm... Should you be watercooling?

Live and learn man! We all have to start somewhere.

OP, it helps me to have a visual, so I quick did a youtube search. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaEHVpKc-1Q It's talking about bigger industrial pumps, but the concepts are the same.

Basically pumps will "suck" in water in the middle and fling it outward in the impeller. So the middle connection is always the inlet and the outtermost connection is always the outlet. Hope this helps, and let us know if you have any other questions!

EDIT: Not to insult your intelligence or anything, but I wanted to throw this out there just in case you hadn't heard it before. Don't EVER run your pump dry. It will ruin in a very short time (<1 min). The D5 is designed to use the liquid it's pumping as a lubricant.
