difference between i.link cable and regular firewire?

I just got a mini dv cam, and it came with a 4pin to 4pin sony i.link cable (sony's firewire), but i don't have a 4pin input, and for me to buy a 4pin to 6pin i.link cable its like 40 bucks.

so does anyone know if there is any difference between a regular 4 to 6 pin firewire cable, and the i.link cables? i'm thinking there isn't, but i want to make sure before i go out and buy one...
 
No big difference. You can plug that cable that came with your MiniDV to any firewire port. As for the cable, I think there are 3 types of connectors. Why arent you using the cable that comes with your MiniDV?

the wont fit in each other. Afaik you need to get a 4 to 6 pin cable. with the right male/female on each end.

ordering from newegg or some place is DRASTICALLY cheaper than paying $40 - $60 in a store. like $4-$6 instead.

Another store to check is the apple brick and mortar store, they have thin firewire cables for about $20, cheapest i found anywhere. I got a 6pin - 6pin there. They also sell belkin ones at the apple store, but they are $40+.

I *think* 6 pin firewire adds power lines to the data lines, so you can charge ipods and such, but im not a firewire guru.
 
Officially, iLink is just a brand name for
I-EEE-1394 cabling

as is firewire.

firewire has 4 COMMON plug ends

6 PIN (horseshoe shaped) male or female

and the pictured "mini" plug that looks like a box crushed in on one side.. (4 pin)

All of them are compatible, as long as the fit is the same.

does not matter if the box it plugs into says 1394, FireWire or iLINK on it.
 
ok, thanks that's all i needed to know, i just wasn't sure if it was like a sony specific cable or i could just get normal firewire..
