difference between 8 and 6 bit panels?

i'm looking at a dell 1704fpt, which i THINK uses a 6 bit, but i'm not sure... but the dell 1705fp uses an 8 bit, which i read is better. Is this true? i don't care about ghosting or whatever, all i care about is reducing eye strains and eye fatigue. will an 8 bit panel be better?
 
An 8-bit panel is either an S-IPS (unlikely at 17 inches) or a PVA/MVA panel (the more likely case with the 1705) and as I mentioned in your other thread, it will be much better for viewing angles/contrast/colours, and therefore better for eyestrain. The simple answer is most definately yes, you will be better off with a true 8-bit panel.
 
Isn't there anywhere I can find out which panels that are used on certain monitors?
 
Okay, from what I could get out of that, the Viewsonic 201b is an 8bit panel, all I needed to know, thanks!

if the dell 1702 and 1703 are pva, doesn't that mean the 1704fpt should be 8 bit?

No. I believe the 1704FPT is a 12ms TN panel which means it's 6-bit.
 
oh well, i just realized that the fpt is a pretty crappy monitor from a person who compared it side by side with the 1704ftv. It has super bad viewing angles from my knowledge.

i might get the 1905fp, but then again, i might just go to a store to buy a 19" since its not very cheap, even with coupons
 
1905 is a very good PVA panel. Provided you won't be playing too many games (25ms response time) you would be quite happy with it.
 
well i don't think i'm gonna be buying any lcd any time soon then, cause i do game occasionally, and there are reports that the 1905 is terrible at it. I don't wanna spend so much money on something that can't even handle games!
 
Then your best bet is to go with IPS panels. They are 8-bit, have wide viewing angles and are pretty good for games. Not as good as fastest TN panels but much better than PVA.

Unfortunetaly, IPS panels are mostly used in bigger displays. I don't think you're gonna find a 17" IPS LCD. There are 19" IPS LCDs but their specified response time is 25ms. Though, that's still MUCH faster than, say, my Samsung 193P which is a 20ms PVA panel. Or you could go 20" and get a 16ms IPS LCD that is very good all around. The most popular and affordable 20" IPS LCDs are the Dell 2001FP and 2005FPW.
 
^^^ What he said. The 2005 has the best specs of any current (affordable) IPS panel. They are a good middle ground in LCDs, and that's why I bought one myself.
