Difference between 7300GS and 7600GT?

For a budget system, is it worth spending $120 for a 7600GT when a 7300GS can be had for half the price? The system will be used exclusively for World of Warcraft for now, and probably Spore when it comes out. It's for my girlfriend and she hasn't seen any other games that really interest her.

She would definitely thank you for getting the 7600gt over the 7300gs, especially in WoW.

Even at 10x7? For higher res I wouldn't even consider the 7300, but we're trying to get a mobo, vid card, and possibly memory under $200. Is there any better card than the 73 in the same price range? It's been a year since I've been following video cards (and longer for low-end), so this has become unfamiliar territory for me.

Definitley go with the 7600gt. The 7300gs will cry during WOW when any real action starts. I also seriously doubt it will do well with a game such as Spore.

7600GT's hit a real nice price/performance ratio. 7300GS's are so gimped I wouldn't touch them. Go for, at minimum a 7600GS. They can be had for $90 on newegg.

7300GS= 4 Pipelines
7600GT= 12 Pipelines

If your really short on cash you could try to find a 7600GS which is a slower clocked 7600GT

I think there is also a 7300GT which is an 8 Pipeline card, but only consider that if it is below $100

So, sounds like 7600GT is best bang:buck ratio right now. I've not been following video cards for a year or so now, so basically anything since the 7800 came out is news to me.

What in the 7000 series would compare to my old 6800?

What kind of 6800 was it? A 7600GT barely edges out a 6800Ultra in most cases, so it's a bit above or equal to the 16-pipe cards of the 6800 series. A 6800NU would probably close to a 7600GS, while a 6800XT would be close to a 7300GT (but definitely slower in 1280 or higher due to 128-bit memory versus 256-bit memory).

The 6800XT would be around the performance of a 7600GS, since it's just an 8-pipe version of the 6800 series. It still has the full 256-bit memory bus.

unless i am mistaken, there is a 64bit memory bus 7300 and a 128bit memory bus 7300, a 64bit memory bus 7300 wouldn't hold a candle to a 7600

Hmm, mine's just a NU, so she might be getting a 7300gt after all. Can't let her get a better card than mine after all. :D

Buy yourself a new card and give her the old one. Win win situation right there.

QFT. A 7600GT would be a nice upgrade from a 6800 vanilla.

Agreed, but I don't game enough anymore to really warrant an upgrade atm. Full-time job plus full-time college means no free time. I still play GTA:SA a bit, and I'm starting to get back into WoW, but that's about it really at least until winter break.
Also just looking over newegg, I can't find any AGP GT cards above a 7300. Do they exist?
Edit: Found an AGP 7600GT over at zzf...for $185 :eek:

Ah, so you're on AGP then. I know the feeling :).

Yeah, when my 9800pro died going on two years ago, I needed a card and decided to go with a better AGP card than something like a new mobo + pcie 6600 for the same price. Still haven't gotten around to switching over.

The CPU you can probably find around here for cheap in the FS/FT forum, memory too if you need it.

That's the video card I'm leaning towards right now, but other than that she's got a s775 system. We're using her existing 519j to save cost (it's fast enough for now), so I've decided on an Asrock Dual-VSTA mobo, and whatever RAM I can find in my closet. She's got 512 now, which as you know is at best tolerable for casual gaming, so I'm considering getting a 7300GT and another 512 stick instead of the 76.
Yes, I'm going back and forth a lot in this thread, but I think I'm close to deciding.

just make for damn sure you get a 128bit memory bus 7300GT, not the cheaper neutered 64bit memory bus model

I ran CS:S with all the eye candy on, but no AA or AF at 1024x768 with a 6600GT and I wasn't even getting 60fps. The 6600GT is better than the 7300GS. I'd say get a 7600GT, or you could go one better for $185 at newegg and get a eVGA 7900GS. It'll be worth it, especially if you use AA and AF.

EDIT: Ah... Just noticed the mention of AGP... Hmmm... Any one of these would work, depending on your budget, but I'd say not to go lower than a 7600GT.

isn't the 7600gs lower than the gt model? i'm looking at the evga 7600gt for $110 ar, or a 7300gt for about $75

yes, it falls between the 7300GT and the 7600GT

i dont think you will find one that cheap, a 7600GT AGP that is, thats why i suggested the 7600GS, better than the 7300GT, not so hard to get or expensive as the 7600GT

Just find a used X800XL. I picked one up for $70 shipped in the FS forum.

I would atleast get a mobo that support C2D CPUs, that way you have some sort of decent upgrade path later on.

there was one linked earlier in the thread, an evga i think, that was 130 minus a 20 mir. seems like about the best deal so far...

...except maybe that. i've always been an nvidiot (with the exception of my 9700 and 9800pro), so i wasn't even thinking of ati's line. hmm, this makes things more complicated. and i have a paper due, so research will have to wait a day or so.

An X800XL/XT/XT PE, X850XT/XT PE, or a 6800GT/GS/Ultra will be better than the 7600GS. The ATI cards don't have SM3 support, but that doesn't really matter since none of those cards are powerful enough to make good use of it anyway.
