is it ok if i have 2 different types of ram being used. i only have 256 and i wanna get 512 and i wanna no if i need 2 new sticks or just one more to add onto the other one.
 
As long as you have the motherboard slots, it doesn't matter what size the RAM is you put in there.

If you're planning on running dual channel (i'm thinking not) you would need to get the same size and speed RAM.

Dual channel runs a little faster in theory.

You will be fine with just adding another stick though.

What you need to do now is look up your motherboard and find out what type of memory it handles, and how much you can put in each slot. Then you can decide what to buy.

Also, adding 2 different sticks into the same computer always has a chance of not working. If possible, buy the same speed and brand as you already have. You didn't give any relevant info, so I can't go too much into detail.
