is there much of a difference? because my grandmas audigy 2 isnt that great of a card for 80 bucks so id hope the zs would be alot better for almost 20 bucks more

They're almost the same. Would suggest you try better speakers, update the drivers, maybe better cables or better power, before you fault that A2. In day to day applications and most games, you will not hear a difference between a ZS and the original Audigy.

yea i wanted to know the difference also =P
but the main think is the difference in advertising in that the new zd "has a 108db snr" opposed to the 106db snr of the 2.

I wanted to know if there were major differences before i mod the opamps.

blah whatever im just gonna shoot for the ZS because im hoping the sound isnt as muggled as it is on her computer on the audigy 2

IIRC the DAC was replaced with a different variant of the same model. Supposedly the overall quality has improved slightly in terms of clarity and frequency response, but I haven't heard them both in a direct comparison or seen any detailed matchups. The people who do careful audio analysis usually don't bother with computer/gaming sound cards.

Yeah, alext and NightRaven are right.

The Audigy 2 ZS has 108 dB SNR, Audigy 2 has 106.
ZS has a 24-bit 192 kHz DAC, the Audigy 2 normal has a 24-bit 96 kHz DAC.
And the Audigy 2 ZS supports DTS Extended sound and Dolby Digital EX, whereas the Audigy 2 only supports Dolby Digital EX.

And the 7.1 vs. 6.1 support of ZS vs. Audigy 2 like alext said.

I was wondering the same, I have an original Audigy and it works just fine on the games I play now, do new games use the more advanced EAX? Should I upgrade? Would it make that much of a difference?

Your Audigy should support the highest form of EAX out yet, at least with the EAX 4 driver update downloadable from Creative's website as long as you're using Win2k or XP.

The ZS is the newer version of the Audigy 2 and it has a cleaner DAC in it. The ZS now has a 108db to SNR and the old one had a 106 SNR. Other then that, they are the same but may come with different game bundles.

Just read the thread and yeah, seems I forgot that the A2 ZS supports a seventh channel.
