Did NewEgg make a mistake here?

This is the 3870x2 card I ordered: ASUS EAH3870X2/G/HTDI/1G Radeon HD 3870 X2 1GB

They sent this one to me: EAH3870X2/G/3DHTI/1G -- the one with 2 fans and ddr3 memory.



Needless to say, I'm having problems with my system seeing one of the processors. One is fine and working, the other says it has a driver problem. Then, when I get both of the working and set my resolution to my monitor's native 1900x1200, I can't see part of the screen (toolbars, start, etc). I downloaded the latest driver, ccc and so forth but am getting frustrated and wondering if there's a problem with the card (and not the user? lol ).

I'd uninstall your drivers, run driver cleaner and then reinstall the latest drivers.

So you have the 4DVI port card? Haven't seen anyone get one yet. So I'd say Newegg did mess up, but possibly in your favor.

Yea, it's cool that you got the card with 4 dvi ports, but the only thing I think is worse about that card is the heatsink itself, and the fact that it doesn't exhaust out the back of the card. So your case may heat up a bit...

As for the drivers, yea, I'd uninstall, boot into safe mode and run driver cleaner, then reinstall the cat 8.3's and see what happens.

I was thinking they screwed up in my favor too. As for the drivers, it's likely user-error somewhere along the way. Isn't there a way to alter the refresh frequency other than 59 and 60 hz? In my last system, that was the way I'd correct the "overscan" problem or whatever you call it. (where I can't see the edges of my display the pc is trying to show (ie. can't see start, the tool tray and anything on the far top/bottom/left/right). For what it's worth, I'm using the the dvi - hdmi cable and hdmi input on my monitor (viewsonic vx2435wm) all on Visa 64bit Ultimate (I know..I'll fix my sig once I get this rig working properly)

What happens if you have to rma the card? Do you have the proper receipt for an rma? You may want to email them and get this fixed if you cant rma it.

Yeah, good luck with ATI and their hot drivers for Vista 64. Maybe you should have read my earlier posts regarding their 3870x2 and Vista 64.

Dang, that is a horrible card. How much did you pay for it? Wanna sell it to me cheap?

Just kidding off course. i have been looking for someone to test out this 4 port card.

Nope, sorry. I have 2 monitors. IF I can get this sorted out though, I could move a tv with hdmi-in in here and would be happy to run your "test." Seems I've got the driver issue sorted out but that brings another problem into the mix. I'll start a new thread and see if I can get things worked out. Thanks guys for all the great information and help.

Refresh rate is not the same as overscan. Since you are using an LCD, the refresh rate won't change anything. Overscan, though, is a problem of analog TV connections, and it isn't really possible to have overscan with DVI or HDMI. So neither of those can cause the problem you are describing.

Well, I finally got lucky and found out what I was missing..... I hadn't installed the driver pack for my viewsonic monitor. At first it made no difference but after a reboot, everything is in proper working order. ...I also moved the DVI connection to the top left (when looking at the back of my pc case) of the 4 dvi outupts. (which seemed odd to me since 3 of the dvi outputs are white and the one on the top right was yellow/orange).

Refresh rate is not the same as overscan. Since you are using an LCD, the refresh rate won't change anything. Overscan, though, is a problem of analog TV connections, and it isn't really possible to have overscan with DVI or HDMI. So neither of those can cause the problem you are describing.

i'll admit i don't know a lot about this subject, but i disagree based on what i believe i know i like to use my 53 inch panasonic tv as a monitor. native 1080i will display all the desktop but obviously it's too small for monitor use and flickers. my other option is to use 720 x 480 or is it 480 x 720..you know what i mean, which is the other native resolution for the panny(480ED tv setting in the nvidia control panel) with my 7900gs..that gives me the size i need with no flickers to use as a monitor for everyday use, but...toolbar, sides etc are cutoff...using the nividia overscan compensation feature, i am able to move the mouse to edges so i can see any part of the desktop i want to and as i believe it's designed to do..but i have a dvi to dvi connection from my pc to tv..

so..doesn't the reality of my situation contradict the statement "it isn't possible to have overscan with dvi or hdmi"?

not trying to start a fight..just want to make sure i'm understanding things correctly

Er, I have no idea whats going on with your TV/video card (flickering?) but since HDMI/DVI are digital, there is no overscan because the image can't shift. Overscan has to do with shifting images in analog signals (eg, the adjustments needed when using VGA output) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

Your TV must be doing overscan adjustments when it shouldn't be then, or it just likes to zoom in

damn..i wish i understood this stuff better.. here by the way is a screenshot and what it would look like if i moved mouse to bottom of the screen to shift up so i can see the start/toolbar:

now, here's a shot of what i have my overscan settings set at:

if i used native instead of overscan, it fixes what i see so i can't move the screen around so i can see toolbar, sidebars, etc.

this jives with stuff i've read that 5% to 15% overscan is not unusual and i've never been able to get the option available to underscan?
