Did I make the right decision?

its my first step to pci-e land... i was looking into purchasing an evga 6800gs Superclocked 490/1100 and the sapphire x850xt.. both cards are really cheap! 199$ only ..

i chose the 6800gs over the x850xt because i read so many people complaining about the ati drivers.. so that made me scared of getting the ati...

will this 6800GS play all on hi settings? as in 4x AA/16xAF in games like Cs source... I only play using 1024x768 reso. i never go beyond that...

my System Specs
Amd 3500 Venice @ 2.5ghz
Kingston Hyper X @ DDR 460 2.5-3-2-6
Asrock 939 Dual sata <--- LOVE THIS BOARD!!
Maxtor 120gigs..

thats about it. any comments would be appreciated guys! ciao!

LOL - well, you'll hear just as much bad things about nVidia drivers, as well. And just as many good things about both companies. About the only real DEFINITE and unarguable thing you could say in one or the other's favor is that nVidia's Linux driver support *is* superior to ATI's. Other than that...they both win some and lose some in driver features and support.

As to the two cards you are choosing between - sure, the 6800GS is a fine offering. The games you play can make a difference in deciding. In 'older' games like Half-Life 2, Far Cry, CS:S, FEAR, etc, the X850XT would be much faster - but, then, the 6800GS offers features to make 'newer' games (ummm....well, just 'Age of Empires 3' at the moment. OH! And 3dMark06, naturally) look substantially better.

In fact, with 4xAA at 1024x768, a 6800GS just about has 'Age of Empires 3' at playable FPS with all the in-game graphics cranked up. If you overclock the card a little (very important to do - a LARGE part of the value in that model comes from how well it overclocks!), it would certainly be a great fit even for that very recent title!

What the fuck is with people baggin on the drivers? There were issues what, 4 years ago and yet people are still using that as an excuse? The drivers are fantastic from both companies as far as i've seen from a 6600GT and an x800pro cards experience. As far as which card you got, you're fine with that 6800GS. The 6800GS is a fine card from what i've seen and you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference with that and the x850 anyway. On a side note, you'll get SM3 image quality which will be kind of nice if you're into that.

Only if the game supports it :p, no see if you can try to overclock it, if you can it will performe simalar to the x850xt, personally I would of taken a x850xt rather thana 6800GS (I mean hell, the x850xt beats the 6800GT most of the time, and sometimes the Ultra as well) but I will say this... Did you save money by going the 6800GS route? well Did ya? if you did, then don't sweat it, the only reason I would feel bad is if I spent 300$ on a GS when I could of gotten a XT fo 300$ as well(not 100% sure on prices atm)

Regardless the GS will make you happy, and should be able to play games at good settings, maybe not as good as an x850xt, but pretty damn close.

Ati 5.x line hasn't been that great so it's why its still brought up.

Anyways, 6800GS is a beast of a card so dont worry about it you made a fine choice. The GS is compared to 6800GT's but they are more in the middle between a GT and a Ultra.

I think you would be just as happy either way honestly. Overclocked 6800GS cards seem to run about the same as an X850XT.

I have no problems with either drivers.
