Did i make a good choice?

Yes, i heard that is a problem switching from nvidia to ati....so i will be formatting my hardrive and do a fresh install of xp and then run the 9700pro cat 3.10 drivers... just to play it safe ;)

reinstalling XP is a bit drastic, newer detonators and forceware drivers don't stick up the system like the 20's did. Detonator destroyer works well as does simply deleting the nvidia registry key (which DD does).

i used to be a hardcore nvidia fan, til i got my 5900u (i won it so i didnt spend anything on it) i was very unpleased, found a 9800pro on ebay for 45$ Ati is doing great at the moment :D

very good choice. I should have got the 9700pro over the 9600xt

i totally dissagree. I have two roomates, one with a 9700 pro and one with the 9600 XT. ID MUCH rather prefer the XT from what i have seen of their two systems. The guy with the 9700 pro benchs about 1500 higher, but the XT performs a lot better on games such as Need for Speed Underground, CoD, Day of Defeat, Worms 3D. I know some of those are very graphic intensive (aside from NFS Underground), but those are the most popular games we play in my apt at this moment. And the guy with the XT seems to have better picture and smoother frames. Plus, for 150 bucks including hl2, you cant beat the 9600 XT.

The 9700 pro does benchmark quite a bit higher though, ill give you that.

anyways, just personal preference

im teh n00b around here (hardforum) anyways, dont mind meh

Maybe they have drastically different systems. Guy with the 9600XT has a P4 3.2C while the other has a 1700+ or something like that. On similar PCs the 9700pro would crush the 9600XT.

the 9600 XT has a intel 2.53 running at 2.35 515 single channel pc2100. The guy with the 9700 pro has a amd2800 running at 2.2. Both of them have 1 gig of single channel pc2700. Like i said, all the benchmarks say 9700 pro all the way, but from what i see, id rather have the 9600 xt. Plus 150 including hl2, its a deal, as opposed to the 399 that the 9700 pro used to be.

In other threads your sayings that Nvidia sucks and ATi rocks.
Then why ask if you made a good choice or not?

Related to your thread...Yes that was a good choice.

i never said nvidia cards suck.....i said they suck for a particular game (half-life) thats it.

And you know this because of a benchmark sponsored by ATI using ATI provided computers on a game 9+ months before it's release...

obs wtf are you talking about i came to that conclusion when i played that game on a ati videocard 9600 ...the geforce4 mx 440 did a better job than ati on that game....your just talking out your ass. i was talking about half-life 1 you idiot

even if i ment half-life 2 there is no doubt that current line of FX cards will be spanked pretty hard with the current radeon 9700pro - 9800xt cards no doubt much better support for dx9

If I remember, we bought the same card, same day, same price...I've previously used Detonator R.I.P. and it works well, comes with CAB cleaner too. Get it here

my old geforce4 mx 440 raped my 9800 pro at Day of Defeat....until i found the right catalyst drivers....stupid ati and their drivers

yeh well you would expect that from a 1997 game...which at the time was optimized for geforce cards, are you using 3.10s?

wtf... you guys are nuts.
Ati needs a little setup, but runs well in half-life.
I was upset because i only get 400fps with my 9800pro
while my 5600nu gets 180fps!!!!!!!
you know... half-life shouldnt even be a game to test performance of cards these days.
let's drop the subject.
