I recently tried to replace the stock fan on my 6800GT with something a bit quieter, namely a Zalman VF700Cu. I followed the instructions carefully, but when I put my newly equipped GC back in my system, it refused to boot, emitting a loud, high-pitched beep. I emailed Tyan (my MB manufacturer), asking what that particular beep means but I don't have an answer yet.

In the meantime, what should I check? Are there any common mistakes that I might have made?

Maybe I should mention that my computer boots just fine (I'm using it now) with a different video card.

hmm check that you have the power connector to vid card tight i know that the 6800s will beep like that if thay arnt getting the extra power

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I can't test it right now. . . but if that turns out to be the problem, I swear I will beat myself in the head with something heavy. . . :p

i had same thing happen and it was because i didnt hook the extra powercoard from PSU to the card :(

been there done that... when i updated from a 1.2 athlon to my athlon xp, i didn't plug in the extra power for the cpu and was getting all sorts of errors trying to load windows... and of course my friends called me out on it ;) and still won't let me forget, and it was quite a long time ago :p

Yeah I was about to say, plug in the card had someone not mentioned it :D There's a speaker on your card somewhere for that exact purpose....if you don't plug it in it yells for power

Sheesh..I have done it on the extra 12v for the mobo and been stumped for 2 days once...I felt like such a jack ass. :p

spuz, was the problem the computer wouldnt even turn on? or that it would start the boot process and just turn off sometime through it.

I am actually having the same problem myself... I'll turn on my computer and it will either stay on for like 3 seconds and then off. At the most I got it to stay on like 1 minute but that wasn't enough for it to finish booting and it turned off again. Although that would be strange if that was my problem because it just started randomly beeping and shutting off one day when I was on it... I didnt change anything in it I was just talking on AIM or something hah.

i did that with my brand new 6800GT GS once, and i was lke WTF?!?!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

heh, i had a friend build my first PC while I watched so I could do it next time. Thing never worked right, all kinds if problems. Took it to a tech shop, the IDE cable from the HD to the Mobo or something was backwards.

I remember when they were not marked with red or even the little piece of plastc like now. Just straight black/gray plugs and cables with no marks..ugh....that was such a pain in the ass at times.

I'd rather look stupid and have that be the problem.. hey, it's well worth looking stupid than having a good card be killed.

It wouldn't start the boot process. The fans would start spinning and the monitor would flicker for a second but it would just beep and not do anything.

My thoughts precisely :) But I still would have preferred not looking stupid :p

Ok, it's stupid, but I be many of us have done that all well.. I did it twice for my 9700, and once for my 6800. I realized it right away, but still, I've forgotten before.
