Did I just buy the wrong cpu?

I bought a p4 3.0E prescott when I got an intel 865perl for free, but I read a couple of threads and the C version is a little faster and runs cooler. I know the prescotts run hot but I should be okay with stock cooling if I don't overclock right?

Yes you'll be ok with stock cooling. If you've got an Intel branded board then you can't overclock that much anyway. So I wouldn't worry about it.

ye u sud b ok, just dont overclock it cuz it will overheat easier than northwood.... i was gunna geta prescott but from what i heard, its wack

yeah, I'll stick with it, but I should've done a little more research before that.

Prescotts do run hotter and slower compared to northwoods (but only up to 3.4GHz). However, they seem to overclock better because of their longer pipeline.

well, I'm not overclocking. Realistically speaking what's the speed difference? nothing right.

The difference is not much, it comes from the Prescott having a 31-stage pipeline compared to the Northwood's 20, but they both run at the same bus speed (which works against the Prescott's favor). The Prescott's extra cache (both L1 and L2 have been doubled to 16K and 1 MB respectively) helps it make up for this, so both the Pressy and the Northy are pretty evenly matched.

Just be sure to keep it cool, heat's really the problem with Prescotts.

i found the prescott i had,was a bad overclocker...unless running water or vapo/prommie maybe...and it was def slow compared to the "c" i had before it.

the prescott i bought i returned...and got the northwood "c"

but seeing the op has an intel board...overclocking is not an issue.

Prescott's are fine. My 3.0E and 3.0C run about the same. The Prescott's a little faster in some games and the Northwood a little faster at some other stuff. When overclocked to 3.42GHz they are almost identical in all my benchmarks. But I'm betting my Prescott will overclock higher. Although I really need better cooling to do it.

well...guess you got a bad chip :p

should've used "tend" in place of "seems"

My God man, ever hear of grammer? Damn, go back to grade school and tell the teacher you need to start over!

On Topic...

The Prescott is fine since you will not be over clocking, and you will see no considerable speed difference between the same clocked Northwood based P4 unless you are a benchmark whore and only care about benchmark numbers. You will be happy with what you got.

I typically find that people who use grammer like that on the net are just F'ing lazy. Too lazy to type out words and punctuation fully.

yeah I did..thats what i was saying
a prescott funny

if AMD had some kind of hyperthreading...prescott would'nt even be in my vocabulary.

or maybe he's just having fun...outside of an otherwise structured life..

you can say *fucking* in the [H] forums...*F'ing* borders on lazy ;)

I've got a 3.0E in my new system, happily running @ 3.3Ghz, OEM Vcore. With the Swiftech, it runs about 45C idle, 56C under heavy load. Booted @ 3.4 no problems, but I like to slowly work up my OC's, watching / recording the temps as I go. It's pretty easy to find the point where the relationship between FSB and temps go non-linear; that usually means your cooling is at the limit for that combination of CPU, bus speed, etc.

It's hella fast, OC's great, doesn't overheat, and most certanly isn't "wack".......

Party on - B.B.S.

Check out my sig. I'm cooling it with a Koolance Exos but was running a Zalman 7000 alcu and had it at 3.6g. That got a little toasty though, 54c/69c. If you don't OC you'll be fine and if you do you can probably take it to 3.4g or so with no heat issues.

You should be fine. I have the same Processor and I don't overclock it. It runs between 48 -54C. Not that bad. Not great but not bad for a Prescott.

what's the deal with hyper-threading? is it on by default and can you even turn it off. Any benefits to having it off as opposed to always on?
