Besides the UDMA support levels I want to know if I came out better.

I was working on someone's system and I had a raid card in addition to thier onboard IDE card and I needed to add yet a third IDE controller, The guy went and got a Adaptec ASH-1233 I'm going to read up on it. And it wouldn't play nice with the system So I traded him with an old card that worked just fine, it was a Promis Fastrack Ultra 66, I know that it was supposed to be one of the ones that could moded into a filware riad card but I never did.

So, omitting the obvious DMA differences what do you think?

Anyone that has this card there is something that you should know.

Adaptec says this card doesn't do raid... thats not ture. The maker of the controller chip is

0680A Made by silicon Image. They have now released a flash program, bios and drivers, and sepereate config monitor (which is reall sweet) that does raid. if you update your biox chip on the card, you MUST read the caution on the flashing pages at SI some of them can't be flashed, and the file is bigger and might not fit, barring any caution info it the udate works you now have a raid card. The monitoring program can monitor the status of the drives (sys it even supports hotswaping) and will send out alearts and emails if something goes down or wrong!!!

Now here is the best part, just how good is this controller? Well with the drivers we have for winows (I saw no linux drivers) it just support RAID 0, 1, 0+1, however if you (or you company) gets a nice Snap server 4200 like he six we just got... the controller is the same chip! Our Snap Server are running raid 5, I'm not sure if that is being done by the cip for the OS, it is an embeded for of linux but its only a celery 1.8 ghz I think so I don't know. Everyone saw my ture geek and thought I was creazy as I read the numbers off on the chip and got excited LOL (Side note I was vendictivly happy when I peeked at the drives and saw that they were infact IDE and not SCSI like they kept saying and saying that IDE could not do raid 5... I dislike them because I feel I could do a better more accurate job) anyway if you can find a controller card with flashable bios on it for a good price (say the price of an ok IDE card, you could luck up with a good raid card at ATA 133.


The bad side to this card is that its PCI 2.2 and above ONLY So you board must support PCI 2.2 or you'll end up recgonizing the card installing drivers but not able to actually use it. This could be just the adaptec offering. IE: Problesm arise like the card works just fine in my A7v (not sure what PCI revision level but it must be 2.2 or above)where as my older but not quite super old K7v which I know is PCI 2.1 complient will work like the described failed attempt above.


I came off loads better if I don't mind not having it in older systems... which I do but I can live with that.
