Dialup problem, please help

ok so i posted about a week ago asking for help with my dialup connection, the connection downloads for a few seconds then flatlines for about 2-30min, just sits there acting like its loading the page but isnt doing anything on my dumeter. it was suggested to me that it was my phoneline so i went outside and switched the lines 2nd and 3rd, same problem, now... thinking maybe i might have some kind of virus i backup and format my pc (easy enough for me) rather than running a virus program that might not even detect one if there is one. well, that didnt solve my problem either. so i finally get into my parents office and try their pc, everything loads pretty fast and doesnt do what my pc is doing, they are connected with AOL *sigh* i have also tried 2 different isp's with my pc and come up with the same problem. what else could it be? could it be my modem? i have the most expensive us robotics modem i could find and it has worked fine for months, just past 2-3 weeks it has been doing this crap. please help me i am about to throw my pc out the fucking window!
 
Have you tried a different modem in the machine?

Usually the softmodems that cost less then $15 are better then the most expensive softmodems like the ones from US Robotics. US Robotics has really gone downhill.

Check Newegg.com for 56k modems that have alot of positive votes.
 
well i am using an external modem, because i tried about 4 different internal modems and none of them worked with my pc for some reason, so i tried the us robotics usb one and it dial connect and then not respond at all, so i spent $100 on this serial one

I have had two US Robotic modems in the last year. I had a cheaper internal softmodem and i have the external USB one that you have. I had to RMA my first USB one because it crapped out after about 2 months.

Did you try different PCI slots when you installed the internal modems? A 56k modem wont work in the same PCI slot that shares IRQ's with the on-board NIC.

I would just try another modem if you can and see if that helps. Make sure to get one with a good chipset like Conexant, Rockwell or Intel.
 
yeah i tried different pci slots, none worked for some odd reason... its just seems weird that it would even be the modem since it works fine sometimes. ill have to buy a cheap modem and try it out though, but is there any other suggestions?
