Dialog stopped working on new AVI movies on machine

I'm running Windows 7 and all the sudden today I am not able to hear the dialog from the movies I'm watching in AVI format. The music and sound effects play fine in the movie but not the spoken parts. They work fine in my other computer though and I have the same codecs installed.

I tried playing it across the network on a mapped drive thinking it might be something locally but it still does the same thing.

any ideas to what might cause this?

I have a 5 channel speaker but the computer I'm playing on is 2 channel. I think you may have hit the nail on the head here. I'll check my sound setup.
