I have a ?. Are there any utilities that would dial my computer to connect to my ISP so that a new project can be dl'd each time one is completed. I'm still on dial upa nd can't leave the comp. connected all day. Thanks.

All you need to do is to set up Windows to automatically dial whenever a connection is needed and then have it automatically disconnect after a couple of minutes of inactivity. It works pretty well and I ran it that way at home for a couple of years, so let us know if you have any problems setting that up.

I've done that for awhile on my XP PCs at home... however, with Windows being as fickle as is can be sometimes, I've had it stop dialing for one reason or another and could not get it to (automatically) dial out again..... quite annoying.... is there some way to insure XP continues to allow F@H to dial out when it needs it?

Where can I find these settings in XP? I looked all over and can't find the options to have it dial automatically???

Go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Connections tab. You'll see the radio button to select the way you want it to dial right on that tab. You may also want to click on the Settings button and then the Advanced button and set the "Disconnect if Idle for" time to something low, like a couple of minutes.

I had some problems with XP doing that as well, but I only used it that way for a little while before switching to cable - I rarely had a problem with Win ME dialing out. I can't remember if I fixed it by setting it to never dial a connection and then going back in and setting it back the way it was, but it was something stupid like that. The dial out thing is definitely not perfect and the intermittent nature of those type of problems is frustrating.

That it is... It's the only reason I can't get my parent's PC folding.... and right now (since I've moved back home for a few months to save up some $$$) it's the only reason I don't have my P4c folding away....... I tried, everything... and it's just not dialing out on it's own... so it's slow going.........

Is there no software that'll help with these problems? or a reg. tweak for XP or a "don't forget about this" from Microsoft??

Don't lose hope yet guys...I'll see if I can experiment with our office dial-in to see if I can offer any other tips on auto-dialing. Now that I think about it, to make it work consistently I might have had to set my computer to "always dial my default connection" instead of the dial when a connection isn't present option. Give that one a shot.

There's a point where nothing works... If, for example, someone is on the phone when F@H tries to dial out, then it will try and try.... as it's dialing it'll put up a window, and that window can be cancelled.... but, if you cancel it once, F@H will never... ever... ever... dial out on it's own again... no matter what the settings are in IE... I've even deleted connections, changed modems (and PCI slots) and it wouldn't work.......... it's like it puts something in the registry for F@H that disallows autodial for it..... that, or XP itself gets confused somewhere along the line.............

Check to see that the "disable autodial while I am logged on" setting is not checked. Get to it by going into Control Panel and Network Settings and then click on Advanced and then Dial-Up Preferences. It's kind of hidden in a strange location so it can be tough to find.

I just manually dial when I need to send WUs in and get new ones. I just keep my eye on what's going on and about how long it's going to take before I need to connect. To keep the box from sitting idle, I have 2 instances of F@H installed. That way, I can run 2 WUs at the same time if it looks like one is going to finish and I'm not going to be around to connect. Just an idea for those that don't have any luck with autodial (I've never had any luck with it either and haven't tried to use it for years).

Man, I really miss my cable connection. :(

I didn't realize so many people were having trouble autodialing. We should make this the "troubleshoot your autodial problems" thread. :D

Oh, I don't actually use autodialing. I just got fed up with it and won't bother with it anymore. Besides, the way I do it, while more inconvenient, works rather well and isn't too bad when only adminstering 2 boxen. It will be a bit tougher if I'm able to add a third but I'll find a way to take care of it. The only time I have any problems is when I get stuck with two of the really small WU's that get crunched in no time. Luckily that hasn't happened lately.
