Hello, recently my internet speed has been cut in half.. (from 46.000 bps to 28.8 bps)

Heres the things i thought it could of been:

The phone line- I ran diagnostics on the line, it was fine. I also ran a diff comp on the same line, and it connected at a normal speed.

The modem- The modem just suddenly went half speed one day.. i got 2 different brands, and guess what... all 28.8k

Isp- I use AOL, but so does my other comp that gets a normal connection

A trojan virus- reformmated just in case, still having the problem

Firewall- I have SP1, theres no such thing.

When I get onto aol, it says something is blocking my comp from fully connecting, Please turn off your firewall and/ or anything else blocking AOL. But i have no firewall.. Plz help...... tech support didnt know shit.

XP service pack 1 DOES have a firewall built in. It's disabled by default, but a few OEM's have had then enabled in the past.


My suggestion is that you find another serivice provider. AOL has got to be the bottom of the barrel when it comes to ISP's.
 
AOL is the fastest isp in my area.. as strange as that sounds. can you tell me where to located this firewall, or some sort of diagonostic i can run to see whats blocking my modem?
 
In the classic view of Control Panel it's called Windows Firewall.

If tha's not the problem then you might have to uninstall AOL and then reinstall it. I had AOL for a while back in the 7.0-9.0 days (don't knwo what version they're up to now) and I always had problems with something in the installation getting corrupted. That and AOL's software more or less amounts to adware.
Why haven't you updated to SP2 yet?
 
my internet speed is 28.8... sp2 is 100 megs... lets see thats 100,000 seconds, devided by 60, 1666 minutes, or 27 hours. btw, when i had sp2, it was the same.

I dont have that option ( windows firewall).. is there anything else i can do? (ive reinstalled aol like 4 times)
 
I was under the impression that SP1 never had a firewall, so I'm not sure where that claim came from but I'm willing to be proven wrong. In fact I was pretty confident in my belief but I checked anyway... don't worry though, I checked the control panel and it didn't have a firewall option. I even checked services.msc and no "Windows Firewall" service appearaed.

Anyway, given that it's not a software problem (you reformatted), or a hardware problem to do with the modems (you bought two), we have to look elsewhere. Did you try different PCI slots? How are the modems configured in device manager?
 
When you did trouble shooting with AOL did you check the primary and secondary DNS? Have you tried rebuilding the TCP/IP stack?

SP2 is 266MB so it'd take about 20-30 hours, so yah that's quite a while. BUT you can order an SP2 CD from MS :)

SP1 and SP1a DOES have a firewall. Check here for info on how to see where to get to it.
 
did you plug anything else into the phone line lately? If you did, that is the problem. Un-plug it and I'm sure you'll be fine.

You could also try using a different phone cord. Wires degrade after an extended period of time in use.
 
If you can get 56k, you can probably get ISDN, I would look into it.

No, im not aware of how to do this..

And i actually cantget isdn.... well i might be able to.. this company paid to get it wired about a mile away... how much do youthink it would cost to get ISDN Wired about 1 mile?

its nothing to do with my phone line..

Im thinking its my actual computer saying, " wtf, i cant take this dial up. Im going to shut off the dial up so hes forced to get highspeed."

It's been there since the original version of XP....it's just drastically changed w/SP2. But with SP1 and virgin XP..it's there under ICF.
