This Friday when I build my computer...should I slipstream SP2 into my Windows XP Pro(Which right now only has SP1A) and then reformat the harddrives. Or can I just install Windows Xp Pro SP1 and then just download the update from MS? Any difference?
-Thanks

It's best to slipstream it into your install. If you don't you can easily can't a virus while you're downloading SP2...and believe me, it WILL happen even in just a matter of hours. Plus if you install it afterwards the installer forces you to backup the uninstall information and all that jazz, which is stupid.

How is having SP2 already installed going to protect you from getting a virus? It has nothing to do with virus protection.

Plus, who doesn't have it on a CD already, it's been out forever.

You should slipstream it because you get the "better" firewall, and stuff. Blah just do it, it doesnt take more than 15 minutes and it will give you a lot less headache.

Sure it does. The service packs are just giant cumulative updates that fix security issues. Practically every update for windows is a security fix. Remember Blaster? Sasser? All of those were fixed with service packs and updates. go ahead, connect a non-service-packed computer to the internet and just let it sit there. See how long it takes to pick up a worm/trojan/virus/etc.

windows releases patches/updates/sp's all the time. they are usually released after a virus/worm/trojan because generally its hard to fix a problem until there is one. if you have installed sp1a already, dont have a xp cd with sp2 slipstreamed, and dont feel like making a slipstreamed cd and doing a clean install, go to windows update. make sure your anti virus defs are up to date, do a spybot or adaware scan also. next time you do a clean install, leave your ethernet cable and/or wireless disconnected.
good luck.

the virus point of slipstream SP2 is a good point, you go out on the net with an origonal XP install, you would get attacked.

The big thing is, as long as you install, go to windows update, and nothing else, you should be fine, if your running behind a NAT router to keep the blasters and other nasty's out of your system while its updating. if your not behind a router, then it may be worth trying to slipstream.
