DF-85 2.5" Hot Swap Problems

Hey guys. I recently picked up a df-85 case. I have been up and running great for a few weeks now with my current build. Today I was trying to transfer a file quickly from a laptop to my desktop. So I pulled the drive and slid the drive into the hot swap bay up top. I booted up the computer and started smelling something burning. Sure enough the hard drive does not function now and smells burnt.

Any ideas if the hot swap bay did this or would it have been the psu? Two other hdd and one ssd were connected at the time and are still functional.
 
I have a DF-85 as well and never had a problem with the 2.5" bay. Was that your first time using it or has it worked before?

Its hard to tell what the cause is without looking into it more. Check the power cable coming from the bay to make sure it looks fine. Open up the hotswap bay and check it out too. There is a screw in the top back on the plastic holding it in. If you take that off, you can look at the connections there to see if anything looks wrong.

In my experience, if a power supply shorts out on me, it usually shuts off. If the computer stayed on like nothing happened, then theres a chance there was something in the drive bay that shorted out on the drive PCB.
 
Now that you mention it the computer would not turn on until I cycled the switch on the power supply
 
Did the computer startup fine with the drive installed or did it shut off quickly after the drive was connected?

If the computer kicked off after the drive was plugged in, then its probably something on the power supply side. Its hard to say until you open it up and try and trace down the problem. Look at the power cable coming from the bay as well as the small PCB with the sata connectors on it to see if theres a problem.
 
Thats exactly what it did. As soon I pressed the power button it kicked back off. Is the power supply safe to use? I have not had any other problems. I pulled the cables for the hot swap bay and the bay itself. Didn't see anything wrong there. I also didn't see anything wrong on the PCB on the drive.

What should I look for inside the PSU?
 
If the PSU works fine now, then its fine. The problem is most likely in the power cable going to the swap bay, or that chip with the connectors on it that the drives plug into.

It could have also been the power cable lose or plugged in wrong somewhere. You can try testing the connector that the hot swap bay was plugged into with a fan to test it.

Did you open up the hot-swap bay and look at that little PCB with the connectors on it?
 
I pulled the entire hot swap out. Everything appeared to be fine. Solders looked great and nothing had been damaged.

Hmm, weird. I cant tell anything is wrong with the case from what you've told me. It could just be some random fluke with the drive you used or maybe some debris in the bay.

Have you tested the drive in the laptop to see if it happens to still work?
