Why no discussion of this game? Anyone got it yet? Impressions? I am fighting hard to not buy it because I have so many other games to finish first and I want to wait for the price to go down some, but it looks like it is a pretty sweet game if you like this kind of thing.

I was thinking that, too. I just picked it up on my lunch break. I got the PS3 version because I'm fed up with achievement points...and it just seems like the slightly better version.
The demo was a ton of fun, so I think this will be as well.
The series is a little more "mash-tastic" than Ninja Gaiden, but I like that about it. I've been needing a good action/adventure game now that I'm done with Uncharted.

P.S. - I'm in the same boat with too many other games. I'm still playing Assassin's Creed, Ratchet & Clank, and Rock Band. Smash Bros. isn't far off either. Luckily...or unfortunately, it seems like that's the last big release for a little while, though.

You're forgetting Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Grand Theft Auto IV in April :). STALKER Clear Skies will probably come out around then as well.

I just picked up the game myself. Going to be playing the hell out of it when I get home. Sadly, I had ordered the CE, but they only got the regular edition in today. Switched my pre-order to the regular and picked it up instead (screw waiting). Got the art booklet with it as well.

CANT FRIGGIN WAIT!

(oh yeah, PS3 version)

I honestly don't care about GT5...although I know it's a must have for people. I like my racing games along the lines of Mario Kart and Need for Speed.
I *did* forget about GTA4, though. I guess I keep forgetting that it wasn't delayed THAT long. 6 months ago I would've been shocked to even see it in 2008.

Anyway, back on track, the art style to DMC4 reminds me of a cross between Resident Evil 4 (the panning and cinemas) and Ninja Gaiden. Pretty good mix, no?

Stopped by the local BB during my break today and they didnt' have it. Turns out that they get new shipments in on every Friday. They told me to check back around 11am, so hopefully I'll be there grab it before anyone else. Luckily I can choose from both versions if one happens to be rented out already. I'm hoping for the 360 one though so I'll have achievements to shoot for when I'm going through the game.

I saw the 360 version at the Best Buy by my work today at lunch. So they should have it. I did have to really hunt to find it though, because it was in a special section that is for newer releases I guess.

I'm really new to the 360, so I have a ton of games to play, and I can't pull myself away from Puzzle Quest of all things. That game is so much fun.

How do achievements hinder your enjoyment of the game? Do they drive you crazy not having them all or something?

For me they pester me and make me play the game in a way that I normally wouldn't. For instance I wouldn't normally do something like kill 45 enemies inside of 30 minutes or something like that, but I'll see that stupid achievement and say to myself "it won't take that long to do that, why not?" 3-hours later I have 20 more gamerscore points and I find myself hating the game as a result of giving me something tedious like that. I feel obligated to do the "easy" ones and then get wrapped up in doing more and more. To me they just end up making me mad. I rarely get all of them on most games, but I can see myself wasting a lot of time with them on a game like this.
Rather than giving them out for things related to the game, I *know* this one's going to have achievements related to combo size, killing bosses quickly, and the dreaded "collection" acheivements.

Ahh. The achievement addiction. Most people would probably use achievements as an incentive to replay the game, not drastically alter their first playing experience. :)

I'm on the fence about this game. I was completely underwhelemed by the demo; it just seemed like more of the same, only in high-res. Ironically, I'm now playing Ninja Gaiden for the nth time [Sigma on my PS3 after having completed Black on my 360]. That game just never gets old.

Anywho, the reviews for DMC4 have been solid, so I am tempted to pick it up. I'm actually leaning toward the 360 version due to achievements, but I didn't like the use of the RB trigger in the demo. I'm thinking that the bumpers for the PS3 are more natrual but I'm sure you can probably edit controls in the full game. It's really a toss up for me.

After reading quite a bit of reviews, watching gameplay videos etc, this game looks pretty fun. That being said, I have never ever played any of the Devil May Cry games. Could I pick up this game and actually understand the story? I'd really hate to go out and rent/buy it and not have a clue as to what's going on. So I suppose what I am getting at from that question is: For instance all the Final Fantasy's games seem to build off one another (in some way) and if you had played previous interations you found an attachment and understood some backstory the characters were talking about (this is also a reason I never found FF7 interesting as I had no clue what the h* was going on...). Is DMC 4 like this, in that I wouldn't really understand who was who and why they were doing what they were doing?

Got mine at 10am from Gamestop, the PS3 version. Two hours in so far, and so far, so very good.

I played through the "demo" section of the game. It only differed in one area. There's no time limit, too many bothersome hints. I think I'll shut off that damn tutorial on next fire up.

I'm playing on Devil Hunter Mode with no automatic. Already am having a blast playing it, already feeling like I'm going to miss the Devil Bringer once I start using Dante, but Dante's special all on his own and doesn't need to bring death to him... he is death and he's bringing it!

I'm already liking the customizable moves list, as you progress, if you find you are using less of a move, you can reorient your points to something else more useful for your skill level and tactics. Take the combos, Nero's got a "slow" combo and a "fast" combo, I'm going with fast to keep the style points up. Eventually you will have enough to keep both around, but it's a lot better and puts all the moves fairly accessible within 2 missions. Just not all at once. That's what I didn't like about DMC3, to get to the better versions of moves, you had to purchase the previous versions and the previous versions got replaced making the purchase pretty damn expensive in the end. Especially on replay of the game, you'd have to play like 6 missions before you could upgrade one damn thing at times...

The ps3 version has a recap of the previous games. I'm not sure about the 360 version.

Final fantasy game story lines are for the most part unique to each game. The series just has a semi-reoccurring cast of creatures and items.

Well ...from the following link I've enclosed ...the PS3 version needs 21 minutes to load the game on it's Harddrive BEFORE you can play !

IGN Review - link - R: 8.7
Like most multi-console games, any review would inevitably have to come down to which system is better, and for this instance, the PS3 winds up winning out just slightly. It's not in the gameplay department, because DMC4 plays the same regardless of which system that you play on. Nor is it in the visual department, because visual issues are virtually negligible. For example, the 360 has some harder edges to some characters during cutscenes, and a little more screen tearing than the PS3 at times. The PS3 can be a wee bit darker during some scenes, though. Both systems show off a certain amount of render passing that pops into focus on sweeping vista shots, but they occur at the same time on each system and are quickly dismissed. However, observing these differences will only come via frame-by-frame analysis of each game side-by-side. Even then, you're still receiving an incredible visual experience.

No, the edge comes in the fact that the PS3 installs a large amount of game files to the hard drive, dramatically reducing load times between stages and cinematics. I've timed the game on both systems numerous times, and each time has been consistently in the PS3's favor. Transitions to gameplay from starting menus are relatively close, frequently within half a second or so of each other, but when you're loading up a cutscene or having another pause in the action, the 360's times are easily three times that of the PS3.

Closing Comments
Whether it's on the PS3 or the 360, action fans are going to get one incredible experience with this game, and if you own either system, you'll have a great time.

Thats all I'm sayin.

Yep it does. But it shows a cool run through, summary, of all the prior DMC games dring the install. Which for me was great because i had honestly never played a DMC prior to DMC4. It loads super fast though, and i think its well worth it.

Anyway, since ive never played a DMC4 before i had no real expectations aside from the demo version. Im loving it so far, the first boss battle was awesome, just filled the screen with effects, etc. Cant wait to get back home this evening and continue on.

I thought about getting this game - but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I just can't get excited for DMC's art style. The emo, the leather and zippers, the bad voice acting...... despite the fact that I love a complex fighting engine.

I decided to eagerly await Ninja Gaiden II instead.

I got mine yesterday, installed it at about 9:30 last night, wife came home at 10 so no play for me yet. Going to dig into it tonight though.

Although there was that long install on the PS3, I didn't mind it that much. For the first 1/3 of the install I read the summary of the first 3 games and kinda made me remember how the story went. For the new player, it's detailed enough to give you a feel and general idea, for the veteran a good reminder.

The lines aren't that cheesy. I've seen and heard worse, some too painful to stomach. For DMC, they are acceptable and kinda expected. I find that Dante is a little more on the cocky badass side in english than in japanese where he's more refined into a I'm the expert hence I'm cocky feel. I guess it's to try to appeal more to NA players, but I find if they kept that refined feel to him that he'd be better. Actually if you read through the summaries on the PS3, you will get a feel for his development in personality from DMC3->DMC1->DMC2.

The short load times between menus, cutscenes etc are a MAJOR plus on DMC4. They used to drive me nuts in DMC3, you'd walk into a room, then like 10 sec later the cutscene shows up, then the switch back to battle takes a good 4-5 sec.

With this the cutscene happens within a sec of seeing the load screen, and then transitions back to the fight within a sec. If you skip the cut scene it's almost back into the battle before the whole now loading can flicker once like 1-2sec.

The second boss fight had me fooled and confused at first... then the real fight started! It's good. This is giving me that God of War epicness mixed in with Twilight Princess's boss epicness with DMC's difficulty.

Anyone else finding that the LEVEL's do more damage to yourself solving puzzles than the damn bosses???

I'm also a fan of the idea of installing games. Yeah, it takes a little bit of time, but like others have mentioned, it recaps the storyline, gives you some character/plot details, and once you actually get into the game it pays off tenfold with minimal/no loading times.
It's a fun series with a lot of depth due to the combo and style system. The look is kind of "anime" at times, but it's actually really close to Resident Evil once you get past the stills and get into the game itself.
I'll admit I'd rather have Ninja Gaiden II as well, but this series is nearly on par with that one. At the very least the difficulty is a little more balanced. NG is actually harder earlier in the game because your life bar is so small. By the end, you're a virtual juggernaut. DMC's final levels are typically epic and really hard.

Going to pick up my preorder after work tonight. I preordered the Collectors Edition for PS3. I liked the demo.

Im just the opposite on that. I really enjoy DMCs art style, and the voice acting is pretty decent in DMC4 so far. I cant get into Ninja Gaiden no matter how hard i try for some reason.

...but....... but....... NINJAS!

but but... Devils!!!

and nekkid lesbo demon snow byotches... just a few hours into it and already I'm amused as much as I'm frustrated by the early level puzzles... wasted 30 mins figuring one out... ughhh got a C ranking, replayed it to fix that... dear god it's a brutal ranking system. I can get by with using no items, get style in the A or S range depending on enemies, find most orbs for a A or S ranking but the TIME one is pissing the hell out of me, like who the hell can finish a level quickly and ram through enemies that REFUSE to group together for quick kills, it's like they expect you to just do 1 SSS combo then avoid everyone else for the sake of time then the whole find the orb thing, get less than 90% I think and you end up with an A. Getting S rankings will not happen on your first play through, nor will being able to pass those damn secret missions. WTF 5 Consecutive Busters in the air without touching the ground... good luck with so few skills on hand.

Anyone got word of how long the game takes to beat? Rental or purchase?

Well the developer said it has more content and areas than DMC3 and should be all the more longer. That's a bit daunting because DMC3 was easily a minimum 18 hour game just to pass once, but you only scraped the potential as you can max out only 2 styles per play thorugh and you had 6 to work with I think. I have the same feeling going on here as Nero's got a host of potential moves and combinations but being low in proud souls you kinda experiment with what does and doesn't work according to your game style. Then there's the weapon upgrades, the devil bringer and then Dante to play as in his own set of areas on top of that and you've got a lot of playtime on hand.

I've never played a DMC game before. I downloaded the demo and thought it was okay, but I couldn't really figure out what i was doing. I just button mashed mostly, and when i got to the boss i died but couldn't really figure out why. It looked like I had health left but I was still dead. Does the full game explain things better? I guess having a manual at least would help, but the demo still left me on the fence about the game.

Yeah, the full game will explain how to play. Ever play Ninja Gaiden or God of War? The play mechanics are pretty similar. The general gist is a sequence of attacks with the sword with intermittent gunfire can be combined into combos. For instance an easy one is to hold R1 to lock on to an enemy. You then press back on the stick and hit triangle to do a thrust that'll send an enemy into the sky. You character will follow the enemy, so you can hit triangle a few more times, hit square for some gunfire, and then finish with down + triangle for a downward slash. That's a pretty easy combo that'll do decent damage. There are a ton of variations on that type of combo, but it's a good starter for the demo. Once you get used to that back + triangle launcher, it becomes a little more intuitive. For Ninja Gaiden fans, its a DMC version of the Izuna Drop sequence.

Not sure about you dying without losing all your health. Might've been a bug...although were you playing with the time limit?

No I haven't played Ninja Gaiden or God of War so I guess it was my first time playing that sort of game. As for the boss, I wasn't playing with the time limit. I'm assuming I wasn't interpreting the health bar right. I'll try to give it another try with that combo you listed and see if things work out better for me.

Am interesting, but the fact you play through the exact same areas twice with both characters kind of dulled the experience for me, so I'm waiting for a price drop I think... not sure yet.

I got the game on Tuesday at GS. My GS also ran out of the PS3 version to non-preorders, so thankfully I preordered my copy (I got the PS3 version). So far the game is great.

got it today

already on Mission 9 and the difficulty ramps up like crazy

hope you guys enjoy the frog boss cause its quite a surprise ;)

That's a Good Thing[Martha Stewart]

Half way thru the game now...

I miss Nero's noob friendly moves...

On the plus side, WOW, being able to use Dante and swap between styles mid-battle is nothing short of awesome

Anyone got word of how long the game takes to beat? Rental or purchase?

Ive read 15 hours. But there is definitely replayability involved. and the online stat tracking/leaderboards.

I turned mine on last night and before the start/load screen came up a big black box popped up and said "4saken has accomplished so and so" I thought that was kinda cool.
