Explain to me like I'm 5 (lol) how this isn't just CachyOS with the management programs changed? Both are using Shelly as their default package manager. Both Arch... Why another fork? WHY.

A while ago, Shelly creator Zoey Bauer revealed the fact that they want to create their own distro, where Shelly is the default package manager, of course. Shelly is already the default package manager in CachyOS, a very popular Arch Linux derivative, but Bauer wanted to create a new Linux desktop.

Besides everyone wanting their names on things, I would argue there is no difference.
There's always differences with each distro, even a derivative or copy. I'm not suddenly jumping to the next distro just because it uses a specific app manager.

I mean technically you could say WHY CachyOS. Its Devs are all Arch developers after all. Why the moonlight. ;)

I agree this doesn't seem all that different. That is the point of open source though. People can fork and do as they will with open source software. I'm not expecting it to eat into Cachy usage, really probably a good learning tool for most people looking to get the heavy lifting of maintaining a distro should fork their own little project. That is pretty much how most good distros go their start for that matter.

Fair point. I am using Arch as well, but not CachyOS. Sometimes I wonder what I'm missing but my system works great for everything, even gaming. /shrug

Very little really. Cachy is 90% standard arch. The default setup is Cachy compiled repo and arch standard arch and arch extra repos added to pacman. Cachy re compiles a bunch of packages for V4 or V3 arch but the performance uplift from that varies from very little to a little. :) Other then that a few nice tools like a GUI Sched-ext runner, and default setup of a few things like Annicity-cpp BPFtune. A default aggressive zram setup that sort of thing. Basically things you can just tune yourself in arch proper. I think really a lot of people as their Cachy install ages end up changing and tweaking things anyway. At this point I know my cachy install is probably 3/4 cachy.

If I decide at some point I have to do a full reinstall I'll probably just go Vanilla arch. I might steal a few rule files from cachy, but I'm not sure its really that big a deal to worry about the recompiled binaries.

I went from Arch to Manjaro to EndeavourOS to CachyOS. Haven't looked back since with CachyOS. So many goodies built-in or available. I'd say the win is with the modified kernel Cachymod, which goes all in for smoothness in games & desktop experience in addition to the CachyOS kernel. It all feels like a big boost from the previous distros I've used.

Hmm. I am running endeavour OS, and haven't had any issues. /shrug. Fairly powerful system, so maybe I'm just missing it.
