Desperately trying to cool an Aria

I've had my HTPC in an Aria for a while now, it has always been warm but tolerable. Well I just upgraded it from a 1900+/Radeon 9000/FIC AT31 to a 2600+/Radeon 9600Pro/MSI KM4AM-V..everything else the same.

The new board seems to have moved the cpu socket farther back so most of the cpu fan is covered by the power supply. I think that is the main cause of my severe cpu overheating, and I don't think that can be cured by simply adding side fans.

Originally I had a Thermalright ALX-800 but that got the cpu to shutdown temp (85C)! I put on the stock 2600+ cooler and now it seems to top out at 61C with the side off.

I guess I need a much shorter HSF that can clear the ps enough for some decent air flow. mabye a 1u copper? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
I hated the Aria too many cooling issues and even when you get the temps down. That heat build up from the hard drive may cause premature ejaculation ;) rather premature hard drive failure
 
You had the ALX-800 on wrong if you were getting temps that high.

It is possible the corner of the ALX-800 was like 1/2 mm to tall, so the PSU may have pushed down and lifted it up. Get another ALX-800 and sand that fin a bit.

That is the best HFS solution for socket A in an ARIA. The Zalman 7000 was popular too, but you will have to double-check it will fit, because of your socket. Why'd you change boards, anyway?
 
I changed boards so I could have 333fsb support, and the old board (an ATI 320 based FIC) simply would not work with any 8x agp card for some reason, nor did it do proper usb keyboard support.

The biggest problem with the alx-800 i think was clearance to the power supply. The edge of the heat sink was right up against the back of it (underneath the overhang), so there was no room for the fan clip at all. The fan then had to be shifted forward. The result of this was like 20% of the heat sink got no airflow at all, and 20% of the fan was either blowing down on nothing or blocked by the power supply)..resulting in a ~40% reduction in cooling.

I have a small Globalwin solid copper heatsink I am thinking about trying out. I will remove the fan (which is too tall and very loud) and use the bracket thingy that comes wtih the aria to mount a 80mm fan over it and see what happens.

I found a 1U copper heatsink that uses a blower-type fan. Kinda lound but that can be votlaged down, if I could rotate the fan so it sucks cold air directly from outside the case that might do it.

Even if the sink was only gettin 25% airflow, temps would still have not been that high. Anyway, I remember what you were talking about... Solution was to ditch the other clip, so the fan lays flat. But I had to reseat it a few times to get the sink level, due to the lip of the sink you are talking about.

Had/have virtually that identical blower on a P3 Tualatin. Seriously, if you thought the ALX-800 was not cooling enough, what hope does a 1U sink and a little, undervolted blower have? Not enough metal to cool adequately and I thought the same thing about undervolting... Even with a fanmate at the lowest speed, it was a noisy bugger. Sounded similar to the whir of a popcorn popper! Remember those?

Globalwin sounds like a winner. Free is good. :)
 
If you guys seriously can't cool a non-OCed system in an ARIA you are doing something wrong. I have an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ on an MSI GF6150 board in mine, all stock cooling and no extra fans except the low-speed PCI fan thats included. The CPU idles around 32 C and never gets above 40. Ambient temperature hardly moves from 32 C.

It's a user error...not the case.

It's not user error. I do this stuff day in and day out.

I don't think the problem has anything to do with size of the heatsink. I am pretty sure the cpu socket is just so far back that there is simply no room for airflow through the heatsink due to the power supply overhang. I'll have to post a pic I guess. What I really need is a heatsink that has the airflow paralell to the clip or small enough to open some space up...which is why I was thinking about the 1U HSF.

the other issue is I can't use the pci slot cooler..all 4 of my slots are in use (gigabit nic, sound card, tuner card, video card) but that shouldn't matter to the degree of problems I am having.
