Desktop Wireless Card

I had This & was definitly impressed.. I had the NIB one though although I dont see it on the egg now..

I recommend strongly against Linkysys cards. Their routers are great -- I love my WRT610N -- but their cards, at least the desktop cards, are trash lately. My WMP600N (their top end dual-band capable card) is a huge disappointment.

Thanks both of you, mixed review there. The reviews on that linksys are good so I will keep it in mind. Definitely looking for more options though.

EDIT: The linksys card doesn't seem to like windows 64 bit from the reviews

There are practically no decent dual-band N card from any brand lately. The last decent internal PCI wireless card had only single-band and only 802.11g.

Not to thread-jack -- it is related -- but given what E4g1e said, does anyone know of a really good dual-band card for desktops? Are there any? Or should I just give up, sell both the cards I currently have on eBay and buy a wireless bridge or something.

It's not the dual-band feature per se; it that the Linksys (and several other dual-band N cards I looked at) all use Ralink chipsets. And Ralink has not been good with the performance or reliability of its chipsets.

x2 for not buying linksys cards -they suck.

I have both an edimax card and a gigabyte-made card and they both rock. Using win 7 pro 64 w/ no problems.

You mind linking both of them? Which one do you find is better? Also I am guessing most wireless cards are pcie 8x slot? That is what it looks from the pictures but my experience with them is zip. Just want to make sure i will have a slot for it on my ep43ds3l.

Nope. Most internal wireless cards still use the "legacy" 32-bit/33MHz PCI slot (also known as the PCI-Legacy slot). Very few internal wireless cards right now use a PCIe slot of any type - and if they do, each of them uses only a PCIe x1 slot.

I've just had a basic G wireless linksys pci card and have been using it for 5 years, no probs. Its the only linksys device I've never had problems with...

Link the wireless cards people if you can. Can't see to find most of them on Newegg. There are also a lot of different models for each it seems.

I have used this and this, both w/ good results. I game w/ them. The edimax is the better of the two, though the gigabyte works fine (but not wireless n compatible).

Whats the point of Wireless n compatible? The Edimax one is nice but is it worth spending the extra $15? Also thanks for the links.

I've owned several Gigabyte GN-WP01GS cards (3 actually) and while they do get extremely good results -- great stable links, long range -- they aren't the most reliable pieces of hardware ever. Like I said, I've owned 3, and that's because they rarely made it more than a year before randomly giving up the ghost.

Alright since this is just giving me more questions and most of the cards are getting shot down,

or

Basically I am looking to spend $20, I want something that works in 7 64bit and something with decent range. I just want to try and narrow this down. Thanks to everyone though, I have somehow learned more about wireless cards.

mmm I would stay away from rosewill - my experience is that they make cheap, flimsy, crappy products. I haven't used that particular edimax but, again, the card I own has been 100% great, so I give it a tentative "ok." Do note that it comes with a moveable antennae, which can help w/ reception (you can move it around) but which can be bulky if you have a cramped workspace. I don't personally like those antennas very much, but it's very much an idiosyncratic thing.

you might try this one for 10 bucks more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315082

go here for info on wireless n.

...or you can just get the gigabyte card and if it craps out in a year like the other dude says you can get another. it's 18 bucks.

True, thanks for the info. I will go with the Gigabyte one, that one I know works for 64 bit

as a sidenote, Rosewill doesn't make anything. They are Newegg's house brand, and simply re-brand parts from other manufacturers -- so yes, it's usually the cheaper stuff, which tends to be more crappy than not -- but they usually only stick to cheap parts, like wifi cards and card readers; stuff so cheap it doesn't really matter if it only lasts a year, lol (stay away from their PSUs).
