Desktop Upgrade

I'm planning on upgrading my old desktop for my dad. Right now it runs Windows 98, but it's having several software problems. The motherboard has an SIS 530 chipset with an AMD 500mhz processor and a 10GB HD. I'm thinking of taking out the current ram and adding a 256MB chip. The motherboard manual states that it requires PC100 168pin memory. Pricewatch has those for about $40. Then I'm going to install Windows XP home on it. Does anyone know any locations online where I can find Windows XP Home for a good price? Will XP run well on this computer? I'm upgrading this for my dad and he'll use it for Internet and Email mostly.

My plan of action:
1)Put in new memory.
2)Install XP--Does the installer give you the option of reformatting the hard drive or do I need to do this beforehand myself?
3)Load Office 97.

Thanks

yeah it should handle XP... I know that you can format the HD when installing XP Pro, but I think it works the same with Home ed...

Instructions for buying Windows XP:

1.) Get cash
2.) Go to store (like Best Buy)
3.) Spend cash on Windows XP

Alternative instructions:
1.) Prepare credit card
2.) go to a site like Newegg
3.) order the OEM edition Windows XP (OEM means it only comes with the manual and the disk/license, no box or anything). Also, Newegg requires you to buy some piece of hardware when buying OEM windows, which means you could order a 25 cent screw or something. Also, OEM edition is cheaper than the retail you can get in a store.

By the way, buy XP Home, much cheaper.
