desktop processors vs mobile processors

When I go to buy video games, I check the minimum system requirements on the side of the box to determine if my system will run it. Unfortunately it appears that the specs refer to desktop level processors (such as 2.0+ GHz Single Core Processor).

I have a laptop with an Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 (2.8GHz/800MHz FSB, 4MB cache) in it. How do I figure out the desktop equivalent? Can I make a one-to-one comparison?

In other words, can I look at the above example and say, "Oh. I can buy that game because it requires at least 2GHz, and I have 2.8GHz"?

Thanks.

Just ignore that spec. You have the fastest laptop chip on the planet. ;)
But yours is equivalent to about a 3.8GHz Pentium D or higher. The thing is that they are using the old P4s and those are soo slow that if you have a Core 2 or Athlon X2/Phenom you don't have to worry about CPU because it much more video card bound.
Hope that helps. :D

Wow! Hahaha! Alright!

What about video cards for laptops? Is it the same with processors, i.e. you cannot do a one-to-one comparison?

For example, I have a NVIDIA®SLI™Dual GeForce®8700MGT with 512MB GDDR3 Memory video card. How does it compare to a Dual 768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra?

Or how should I read a game's minimum specs when it says, "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS/640" (i.e. for Crysis)?

I don't know the answer to your video card question, but I just wanted to say "dude, i want your laptop"

The 8700M GT is about the same as an 8600GTS.

For those wondering, specs to compare are:
8700M/8600GTS
Core clock: 625/675
Stream Processors: 32/32
Memory clock: 800/1000
Memory bus width: 128bit/128bit
Memory type: GDDR3/GDDR3

SLI Ultras would blow this out of the water. Games that require a single G80 8800GTS should be quite playable though.

Intersting. So while intel is being fair in the chip department (AMD used to put last gen, single channel chips in their laptops) Nvidia pulled a dirty move with the gpus by calling something a 8700 when its a bit weaker than some of their 8600s. Bad Nvidia! bad! Ati is guilty of the same though in my wifes laptop. Cant remember what it is but its gimpier than a model or two lower in desktop terms.
