Desktop or Laptop?

I"m currently looking to spend approximately $1500 on a new system although I am unsure of which direction to go. A part of me once to go desktop because I'm a gamer and wanting the best performance, this is the best way to go, but at the same time the portability of a laptop sounds very attractive. I study a lot at Starbucks, Happy Donuts, or Borders where hey have wireless internet. So many times I wished I had a laptop with me so I could do my programming homework.

Right now I'm thinking desktop since it gives me everything I really need, also because I think a laptop might disrupt my studies when I do go o coffee shops.

I really don't know. Anyone else here been in my situation where they had to decide between a desktop or laptop? What did you choose and are you happy with your decision? Any input here apreciated. Thanks.
 
In your situation that's a tough decision. How much do you "game"? A lot? Do you have a console? Seems you are on the go a lot, so I'd probably lean towards the laptop. But only you will know if it will affect your studying :D .
 
It really does depend on a few things.

Personally, I'd get the newest Dell laptop that has the Mobility 9800 Pro in it. With that sort of a budget, that's easily affordable and it can best satisfy all your needs for mobility and power.

how do you figure? the XPS and 9100 are 2.1k+(and thats without shipping and tax :rolleyes: , also those base units at 2.1k do NOT have the 9800. for one of those systems with the 9800 id bet 2.4k+, if even that), hes shopping for 1500

also, those beasts get like a hour and a half to two hours of battery life. that wouldnt be good at all for someone who is studying at starbucks alot

id look into the asus barebones. you get exactly what you want and its DIY :D not to mention its cheaper
 
I think you'd appreciate having a laptop to do your programming on because you wouldn't have to be tied to your desk all the time. Plus, you'd be able to take it to school and use it between classes, so long as you can find a place where you can actually get work done.

But if you buy a laptop for $1500 don't expect it to be as powerful as a desktop for the same price still. It'll be plenty fast for what you do with your programming probably but start thorwing games at it and you'll see. If the laptop comes with a Radeon 9700 you'll probably be happy.
