I bought a Deskstar 7K500 recently and have been unable to get it to install properly. it spins up great but none of my raid controllers exspansion cards or external enclosures find the hardware. can any one offer any help or recommened a known external enclosure that is compatable with this 500 gig monster? BTW several of my friends purchased this exact same HDD and none of us have been able to get our rigs to detect these things. Any thoughts?

Deskstar 7K500 problems...please help...

Given that you have multiple drives with multiple controllers, I am quite confident to say that there has to be a systematic error, either with the drives or with your installation methods. Did you happen to acquire all your drives from the same (shady?) source? Have you talked to Hitachi about this? In the end, if your drive does not show up in the BIOS on more than one PC whilst being installed correctly, there is a good chance that it is broken. However, since you have multiple drives, the likelihood of all of them being broken is rather low, unless they were mishandled beforehand.
They were all purchased thru a local retailer OEM. I have contacted Hitachi and was given the instruction on how to format a drive. I advised them that that formatting was not the issue and perhaps my system was incapable of reading a drive of 500 gigs or more and requested a suggestion on a recommended external enclosure.
These drives where shipped with multiple laptop drives that I had also purchased and all of the rest of the equipment worked great, no system that these have been tried on are less than 10 months old so I really wonder if our MoBo's are just not up to the task of reading a 500.
Do you personally own one of these or installed one?
Do you remember what kind of MoBo you hooked these up to?
Could you recommend an enclosure that supports up to 500 gigs that that you have used or seen used?
FYI i checked with MSI and they said my board does not support SATA II or dirves over 150 gig and it was by the grace of god that it reads a 400 gigger.
