Desk/Shelf Combo ideas

ignore the crappy rendering. SketchUp REALLY sucks. If I hadn't been already fiddling with it for 2 hours, I would've installed a copy of CAD or something.

anyways...

this is (roughly) our second fire place. I wish I had the money to remove the damn thing. On the left wall that you can see, there are 2 windows and on the left one is my wife's rolltop desk.

this is my idea for shelving. I might extend the right side (outward curve) along the wall further, but I'm not sure how it will work with the dynamics of the room, a thermostat on the wall and an air return vent. I might have to make some cardboard cutouts to see how it will look and to see if walking into the room will be weird with it sticking out that much.

It is made of Scandinavian pine, and comes in several different sizes, including a "desktop shelf" and corner shelving as well. If they don't have a store where you live, they do have a website........ www.containerstore.com They also have a few other options there as well.

On a self-pimpage/reminiscence note, here's my project (currently in stasis due to lack of funds/time), in case it gives you any ideas, even though our goals are a bit different.

thanks for the input. it is gonna be "built-in" stuff though because it is gonna have to match my wifes current desk and the whole painting scheme. plus I'm thinking about some recessed lighting.

hehe. I was thinkin' about putting a shelf or something in there. I have yet to light it in the 3+ years I've lived in the house.

Put a 70" plasma or screen/projector in front of the fireplace. That'll fix it up real nice.

A more practical solution to hide it is make a shroud of nice looking cloth to cover the whole thing. If done right it would give the room some great texture. You could even light it with track spotlights or something similar.

Hiding it isn't really the problem. the problem is that it takes up so much wall space.
