Dented processor?

Hello everyone,

I was disassembling my system today and I happened to be cleaning up my processor when I noticed it had a funny dent on the left side of the heat spreader. I don't remember this being there when I first got it, and I am wondering what I can do about it. Clearly the seal probably wouldn't be as tight, but I don't have any tools to smooth out the surface, so that is out of the question. Am I able to replace or repair it? I know they have the three year warranty, but what does that cover?

For reference, this is my X6800 that I purchased in February 07. I am running it at stock speeds at this point with Intel's reference cooler.

well it should be fine but really ugly looking.

under the cover is just a chip like the Pentium M

I dont know if im blind or what, but i dont see a dent anywhere. Unless your meaning the wierd beveling on the edge, but sicne it appears to be beveled like that on all four edges i doubt that.
 
Ok, maybe dented was the wrong word. Yes, the dark bevel on the left side is bugging me (the side tho, not the corner). It is not uniform on all sides, it is strictly that one side. And it does look like crap, imho.
 
As long as things are working ok, don't worry.

You may want to install Coretemp to make sure you are cooling the chip properly. I don't know what you should get with a stock cooler, but anything under 50C under load if you aren't clocking should be fine IMHO.


As far as fixing it, you are more likely to cause more damage if you go monkeying with it at this point.

those bevels never match, wont make a difference in how the IHS performs. Only thing that matters is that the flat section on top is relativly flat.
 
Since it's on the side of the heatspreader, it's basically insignificant. Practically all the heat is transferred through the center where the die is, so a little bit less contact on the edge probably wouldn't change your temps by even a single degree.
 
ask yourself "is this really worth worrying about in the grand scheme of my life?"

the answer is obviously no.
